some B18C ?'s
im looking into purchasing this B18C, its a 95-97. the guy told me that there isnt a serial # on the front of the engine because the pre 97 models didnt come with a vin/serial tag on the front, is this true? Also, it has a melted piston in one of the cylinders, which is ok because im looking at building this engine anyway; i want to put my B16 head on it. He wants $700, does that sound like a fair price for the shortblock? TIA.
what he told you about VIN's not being on pre-97 cars is a lie. It sounds to me like he's trying to sell you a stolen engine. A fabricated lie like that can only come from someone is trying to sell a hot item. Don't buy from him!
this guy swapped a B16 for my friend through me, and he has worked on my car before. im just skeptical about everything and anything. The engine isnt even his, hes just hooking me up with someone elses engine. does $700 sound like a fair price if that shiz is legit?

$700 for a stolen and broken down motor, thats too much
i've seen stolen motors go $1500, that is a complete swap with everything you need; ecu, trans, axles, etc
but with the risk involve i wouldn's buy it. once the chp sees no vin it is good bye to your whole car.

what sort of reporting goes to the DMV with a legal sale of an engine? how can i verify if the engine isnt stolen even if it does have a vin on it? because if someone sold me, privately obviously, their motor and then later down the road claimed it was stolen. how would i prove otherwise?
Its hard to tell if a motor is stolen or not. When my 99 gsr motor blew up i could'nt rebuilt it because my whole shortblock broke in peices and the block has a vin plate that matches the vin on the car. Then i went to a engine importer and he had a japanese gsr motor with supposidly 40k. When i bought this motor he gave me the paper work with a receipt . This motor didn't have a vin plate or anything and it says b18c not b18c1 which is usdm.
Reguardless of whether or not its hot. $700 sounds a bit high for a blown up gsr SHORTBLOCK. If the piston is melted as you say then chances are it needs a resleeve and probably more work than that. You can probably find a legit shortblock thats running for the same price.

Even USA engines didn't have a VIN tag until '97 or something. My '95 doesn't have one. ALL engines should have an engine serial #.

Im not confusing the engine code with the VIN. So the dude selling the engine was right when he said that VINs didnt come with the engines till after 96. What about this serial # thing? is there some way for me to run the #'s to find out if its legit?
