Default Rattling noise around 2800-3000 rpm. Anyone familiar with ...

I have a 2000 lude and i had an aem v2 and dc headers installed in the car about 1-2 months ago. It was running good no problems and no unusual noise. About a week ago it started making a high pitched rattling noise around 3000 rpm , its hard to describe, it sounds like metal rattling. When I am in neutral and rev it, there is no noies, only when I drive. It makes the noise through every gear. Any suggestions would be helpful ... Thanks

open up the hood and pull the throttle cable and see if the rattling comes from the belt side of the valve cover. If it doesn than ur tensioner is taking a puke on u. I'm guessing ur car is around 68-75K miles, mine took a crap at 73K. Get it replaced, honda has a revised timing+tensioner kit for $130, labor should be around $200-300, while ur at it replace the balancer shaft belt and water pump too.

Good luck

Would the intake and the headers void my warranty?

Did hit a speed bump really hard? Check you Catalic Converter. usually it makes no noise until air is flowing and the car is moving.

you should check the heat sheilds and make sure that they arent bent up next to the exhaust especially since work was done down there

Check your header bracket. Almost every dc header i've checked had theres broken. With the engine rocking back and forth, I'd assume they would've had a better design. The bracket I'm refering to is the one from under the engine going to the block.

My buddy also had the bracket that prettylude metioned break. Definitly check it out. I know around here in the Orange County area stealerships will void warranties with any performance mod.

seems like a common problem in the 5th gens. everythings stock on my car except for the cai and skunk2 catback. it won't make that nasty noise that loud if i drive it easy for a few days but when you drive it hard itll come back.

I'll provide a 100% guarantee that its your timing belt tensioner. Let me guess the sound is coming from/near the valve train.

It could be any as stated above.

- Cat. Conv (metals inside bouncing around)
- DC Header flanges (small crack when header is hot causing rattling)
- Aem V2 (the metal from the intake could be hitting the metal in the engine bay)

I had the same problem on my prelude w/ DC header, AEM intake. It rattled between 2-3K and sounded like raaararatatata.

IMHO, I think it was the cat. The increased air flow from the header caused metal in the cat to come loose and bounce around.

I have the same problem with my 5th gen. I have a DC Sport header, Tsudo exhaust, and an AEM CAI. I took it to my mechanic and he said that it's the B-pipe. I don't know what the heck the B-pipe is or what it does, but he said it's two pipes that are inside of each other and at certain rpms they start rattling because the engine's frequency matches their natural frequency.

b pipe would be the bottom part of the header

As soon as I start driving it it barely ever makes the noise, but when the engine heats up then its starts makin it between 2500 and 3000 rpm. I am going to take a look at it this weekend, it doesn't seem like an immediate threat. Thanks for the help guys

Same Problem, + I have an exhaust leak and just bought the car last month (everything seamed PERFECT). Exhaust leak I beleive is at the Cat (just before it likely). 00' SH. w/46k I figured it was intake or exhaust related, too high pitched it 'seamed' to be valvetrain or anything of that nature. I thought maybe when the secondaries on IM open up they cause this vibration until the RPM's are high enough to cause the resonate frequency to "un-match". I am probably making absolutely no sense to you guys... sorry.

I have the same problem. I hear a little rattle about 2800-3000. It is some thing in the Cat. I gun my car one day, a big clink clank move through my exhaust. From that day forth, I never heard that sound again. I had that annoying sound for years. My car is a 97' Honda Prelude. I hope that helps.

LOL I think I would have to GUN my car for quite some time then. It just started a month into owning the car.

its the cat converter shield, just take it off and the noise will go away. I got the same noise with my 98 with dc header, apex cat n aem cai. bring it to ur mechanic n ask them to take of the cover of the cat con.
