Anyone going to the EMRA races at Summit this weekend?
Hmm, maybe I'll head out and try and find j00 before j00 head out west, it's only an hour drive for me

I'll be anchoring the enduro in a friend's ST-5 (ITC) EF Civic 4spd. It's blue #73 and you won't miss us in the dark (we're well lit and very slow).
Thank god for the handicap!

really quick blurb on the enduro:
Brian, Tom, and I were running "Ugly but Quiet" #171 Mazda Protege LX for the enduro.
conditions were a little dicey; combination of rain/fog/dark/mud on track for most of the race.
really good for us, though, as old #171 really can't hold its own when conditions are dry and fast. when its slippy, though, that car really comes into its own!
we ran a completely trouble free race thru the first two drivers; had decent pit stops, and i took over with just under 1 hour to go (we were ST-2 classed, so we sat for 13 minutes after the first car went out, so our total race time to the finish would be 3 hrs 47 mins).
i was in the car for a relatively short period, and we were in good position (9th overall and still moving up some). suddenly, i felt a small vibration which got worse quickly. first thought was "damn; loosing a front driveshaft". i figured i'd nurse it and try to make it to the end (at this point there was about 29 mins to go). i went thru the carosel and the vibration was worse. really bad. i was slowing a bit going thru 9 and BANG BANG BANG. big big slide; rear end flew out. i was full power on the throttle trying to catch it and car was still slowing down. by some miracle and lots of luck i held on and didn't go off track. i kept the power on and limped to the pits BANG BANG BANGING all the way. i smelled smoke, and since the car doesn't have an LSD, i figured the front driveshafts weren't the problem, since it still had forward propulsion.
i knew the problem was serious when the guys jumped out and ran toward me with fire extinguishers! left rear was glowing BRIGHT red; wheel was cocked out and down about 30 degrees and flames were pouring out. after two tries with the extinguisher, it was out and just glowing red and smoking like crazy. rear hub and spindle were sheared off; only thing holding the wheel on was the now mangled rear caliper. race was over for us
found out at that time that during my last lap that we were in 9th overall; on track for a good finish, i think.....
well, that's enduro racing!!!
todd
ps. quite a bit of carnage during the race; lots of cars limping into the pits with body damage, pieces hanging off, smashed lights, etc. this was mostly an effect of the weather conditions, not the race drivers themselves. i think emra put on a nice event and we had lots of fun during the battle!

I agree with Todd it was a great event. We ran completely incident free (lots of luck). And finished first in class, sixth overall, set fastest lap time. I will have to say it was one of the coolest things I ever did. Driving at night in the rain was dicey for sure. It was so much fun. I will be back!

first race? how'd it go?

Not my first race, but first night race - and longest.
Theh race Nightmare. Rain, fog, miata handling like crap - we never fixed it. We finished, last. But we finished intact, no damage. Visibility at night was horrific - either too dark (even though I added two Hella lights to shine on apexes) or blinded by cars coming up behind. (yes we racer-taped "louvers" onto the rear window) We changed tires repeatedly. Our dries had a vibration that was just horrific but the wets had no grip relative to the dries. We ended up just dealing with the vibration (which removing wheel weights didn't help). Guess I will need all new wheel bearings now.
On the other hand I learned a ton about myself, driving, racing and dealing with conditions. I am already thinking about the next one ... NASA VIR Valentine's Day anyone?
Thanks to all who didn't hit us during the race
Sorry for your bad luck, Todd. You guys were really running smooth. (we were right next door in pits).
Everyone was really friendly in pits and courteous on track. Lots of incidents but mostly weather related, very little C-to-C contact ... I only can recall one actually, a slider in t9 got t-boned - but not too badly.
See you all next time.

hi joe.
it was fun being pitted next to you guys (matt d was also piloting this entry).
i tried to help with your tire selection, but felt bad as you guys swapped tires back and forth....
i can add, that even with all hand tools and no power, you guys could swap a set of tires FAST!!!!!!
like about 1.5 mins and you had four swapped out!!!!
congrats on the finish, too. thats great for a 1st enduro!
see ya at VIR in Feb, OK???

Poor Matt. He went out for his first stint in the dark after I did the opening one. He immediately spun, stayed out for a while and came back in. First words out "I don't know how Joe drove it like this."
I told him "slowly and filled with fear."
We disconnected the rear sway on one end and he headed back out. He came in a while later and we changed tires back to the vibrating dries. On your recommendation Todd, we had removed all the wheel weights. It was still horrible but we finished on those as they had some grip at least.
Our crew did kick butt! Thanks to Paul, Jeff and Simon.
VIR for certain

I was out there with a couple of my friends. I didn't end up driving but helped crew them in the sprint race and enduro on saturday and sprint race on sunday. yeah for those of you that were there you'll know our car.. #66 green 1983 rx-7 We had a few incidents with the tire wall during the enduro. once in turn 8 and once coming down the hill before the shoe.
The track was incredibly slick and we definately didn't have enough light for the conditions. We were really hoping for dry weather, but you get what you get. The car ran well on sunday when we sent the 4th person on our team through race school.

Thank you very much, but I must add that the car is a champ. It had a lot of body damage, but the car ran well. Engine ran strong, Trans was fine, the car was listing to the driver's side a bit, but it still pulled straight.
Your 240 was running rather strong on sunday I might add as well.
