Default 89 STD hatch, bang on gas tank to start? fuel pump, relay?

ok just bought this car and when i went to the kids house it wouldnt start so i left and said well figure it out tomorrow. he called me later saying he got it to start. he said he put in more gas and banged on the bottom of the gas tank. then after that it started fine...

went to start it today, two days later and it did the same thing. cranks good, gets plenty o spark. i put it on ACC and i hear the fuel pump prime then turn off 3 seconds later. just wouldnt start. so then i decided to bang on the tank and walla - it started...

wtf?

Maybe there's a loose connection at the fuel pump.

ok well i just went back out to mess with it somemore. the fuel pump is only coming on like 1 out of every 5 times... i tried banging on the tank a bit more and that does nothing... who knows maybe it was just a coincidence that worked...

im hoping it just the relay bc i really dont feel like dropping the tank, i know its gonna be a pain bc i live in ny and rust is always a prob. anyway going to get new relay and hopefully it will solve problems.

The relay is under the dash, your problem sounds like either the pump or a corroded or loose connection to it.

Scary thought there. I hate to imagine any kind of electrical arc inside a fuel tank.

The connector is outside the tank, worry not. And with enough fuel vapors and lack of air, it won't even ignite. Not that I'd try it...
