Um, no, not really. I would argue that the Castro district of SF and the shitty parts of Oakland are more ghetto than anything LA has to offer (except for South Central and Compton). People cars get stolen from the nice areas - Glendale, Burbank, South Bay, and college campuses because people know there is money and nice cars there.

Pasadena is still 626, but Riverside changed from 909 to 951. San Bern got to keep 909, and my cell phone was in Riverside County.
I commute from the 626 to the 310.
As for ghettoness, maybe it's because I don't know norcal as much, so when I am in a shitty area, I really notice because I don't know my way out. In LA, I don't mind driving through downtown/ktown/inglewood/echo park, etc. because I know my way to the freeway! I do notice that cars get jacked from the nice areas more - I never had problems when I lived in koreatown, but I have problems when I am in Westwood/Pasadena/Glendale.

ummm really come on guys gettho or not, anyplace you are at if your car is on a theif eyes trust me they will take it no matter where...
Malls etc.. are the worse I would say. Whenever I drive my car I make sure I keep my eyes on it I usually drive it only where the car can be seen.
I have a second car to go the the market, mall, work etc.
When I can't see my car I make sure it can't be turn on, if someone does take it they will have to work hard for it and will take time
I have no computer, no stearing, pedal luck, alarm, gas swicth more..
I try my best so far is still working, people tried to break into it but so far did not work maybe took cd's that's it not even the head unit

I would be very careful in Westwood, especially if you don't have "gated" parking (though that doesn't stop thieves). I know somone who had their ITR stolen in underground gated parking with their roommates cars parked behind him.
When I was going to school at UCLA and lived in westwood my last year...I'd make sure no one was following me, take different routes home here and there, etc. If I parked on campus, definitely autolocked it and pulled the ecu.
Never had any problems in Santa Monica, probably because our apartment was hidden.

I lived in DC and LA, and I would say that LA's ghettos may look nicer, but are more dangerous. In DC, the ghettos are mostly just homeless people and working class people - except for Anacostia, where it's crackheads, dealers, and working class people. I never felt unsafe in DC, anywhere I went - Southeast, New York Ave, Shaw, Columbia Heights, etc. But in LA, if you go down the wrong street, you can find yourself in a very bad place. And by the way, San Bernardino is now ahead of Compton in the 'most dangerous place to live' department.
As for UCLA, you guys may be happy to know that UCPD just caught someone who had been breaking into cars in campus lots. He usually used a screwdriver to gain entry - and stole various things. If any of the UCLA people had stuff stolen within the last year, you might want to call Detective Brown at UCPD, they have a lot of items that were recovered. Car theft on campus is worst in the dorm lots and on the streets in Westwood - if you complain enough maybe they will station some CSOs and have more patrols in those areas.
