Default 954 tranny problems

From time to time I'll have a problem missing a shift into second, where the bike sits in neutral. After missing the shift it is nearly impossible to get the bike back into first, or into second without a fairly hard grind. Is there anything I can do to remedy this besides not missing second? I know synchromesh worked wonders on my B-series tranny, can we use it in bikes? TIA

Sean

"where the bike sits in neutral"?? What does that mean?

I'm assuming you are having these difficulties when gassing it pretty hard in 1st gear. Am I right?

Have you tried keeping the shifter lever in the up position until you completely engage the clutch? I usually don't let the shifter back down until the clutch is fully engaged.

Assuming you are still rolling when you're trying to get back into 1st or 2nd gear, try giving the throttle a blip to rev match the engine.

I don't know anything about the synchromesh stuff on bikes. Assuming you have a wet clutch, you'll be mixing the sychromesh with the same engine oil that goes through the engine. Don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

this is common, when trannies start doing this, you gotta be real firm with your 1-2 shift to make sure it goes in.

some people have had good luck running synthetic oil to smooth things out, aside from changing oils there is not a whole lot you can do without cracking the case usually.

i dont know about synchromesh, but unless it is safe for engine use too i wouldnt use it, your gearbox uses the engine oil to lubricate, not a seperate oil like a car tranny.

what kind of oil do you run? changing it to something different might help, like a car oil that would have more friction modifiers, or a synthetic. there is a chance your clutch might not like it (its bathed in oil too) but i have never had a problem running car oils.

Try some Repsol Synthetic oil. It really makes a difference in smoothness of the clutch. I have an 04 600RR and burned the clutch doing stupid ****. I threw in Repsol and got a little more life out of it. Since I replaced the clutch, Repsol is all I use and it feels so good now.
As far as the synchrmesh, I would not use it because you will not let the clutch disc create the friction they need to lock themselves up. You might start slippin your clutch.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if the tranny and engine share oil...but obviously they do. I had been running a conventional, and switched to a synthetic blend recently...so hopefully that will remedy things a little bit. It usually only happens when I am really getting on it, or when I try to shift quick with the front wheel in the air. I'll try to be a little tougher with her from now on and make sure I don't miss.
