Being that I am front wheel drive, and I have no E-brake, I'd probably won't enter the drivers search.
Darn.
Looking forward to that JGTC/D1/Formula D/Time Attack/Car Show/Booty Contest weekend.

For what it's worth, I pointed out to Hunter at the track one day, that one really clever aspect of building an ITS BMW is that he COULD enter drift competitions. I would do it in a second.

PS - what's the prognosis on the car, on the heels of the crash?

Dennis,
I've heard of guys taking McDonald's plastic food trays and putting them under their rear wheels, locking the e-brake, and sliding around parking lots. So you still have a chance. You'd just have to hook up your e-brake and pick up some Egg McMuffins. I suppose it would probably drive like James Bond's Renault in Paris, in "A View to a Kill," though.

Eh, I've "drifted" my FWD Integra plenty of times without using the e-brake (unintentionally; followed by angry cursing). Just make some silly anti-racing moves and you're bound to end up sideways, especially with a stiff rear suspension.

i remember a while ago some people were quite vocal against drifting. but if you had attended sema this year, you'd realize drifting is hitting it BIG time. the amount of sponsorship available out there if you're a good driving is impressive. certainly way better than road racing...
have no doubt. just like sports compact drag, drifting is here to stay.

Personally, I don't like or dislike drifting. I don't really care. It isn't real racing, but it can be fun to have a car sideways and be able to keep it under control. Drifting seems to be more of an image thing than a competition thing to the people who are interested in it, IMO.
I just hate the fact that those who control the various forms of road racing in the U.S. don't do nearly enough to attract the spectators and sponsors that NASCAR, import drags, drift, etc. have.

Unless you've had a taste of what it's like out there, the average person will find a bunch of ~100-150bhp cars racing EXTREMELY boring. That's what the majority of amateur road racing in this country revolves around. Now organizations like CART and IRL are a whole 'nother can o' worms.
Case in point - my roommates will actually sit there and watch some Formula1 with me if I've got it on, while they think I'm sick in the head if I can sit there and even watch 1 minute of a Star Mazda race.

so do you dislike X games? because a although judged on style alot, it is also tons of skills. drifting is a lot of skills and personal style. that's why it is blowing up big time. i love watching X games. the skill level just elevates constantly. i would not be surprised if drifting is the same.
I think the biggest thing that drifting has going for it is its instant visual appeal. I would bet (and include myself in this category) that the average drift spectator watches a drift event primarily for seeing cars go by sideways with tires smoking. The finishing order for the event once all the points have been added up is secondary imo. On the other hand, the regular road race spectator watches a race primarily to see who wins the race, in other words the finishing order - road racing is after all racing and people basically want to see who is faster. And so the appeal of simply watching the cars go by each lap, in a faster but much less dramatic fashion than in a drift event, comes secondary. Therefore considering what the primary appeal of both drifting and road racing is and taking the general public who is neither a race or drift fan to begin with into account, it is not surprising at all that the instant visual appeal of drifting will get more people interested, quicker. This is an over simplified version of how I see it. I can also easily get into what I like (and dislike) about drifting, but that's a subject for another post.
Driting is like skateboarding with much more expensive wheels.
Anything that get's manufacturers physced and into product development mood is a good thing IMO

i would love to go to D1 this year, its just not in the cards for us(team sloth) this season. i cant complain about drifting... half of the team is drifting so be it.
Drifting to me is a Rally style racing, that the stunnes took and put it on the streets. I think its ok just for fun. But when people call it racing, thats when it pisses me off.
