You ever been in the right place at the right time? I mean The Right Time.
There are life cycles or generations that characterize the worlds we pass into and thru.
But the magic that attracts us to something new isn't just of that new world, we create it as we find our way.
It's not happy magic time forever though.
Maybe you get bored. Maybe the times themselves become less interesting.
So maybe you move on. Maybe you don't.
Does the wheel come back around?
Sure it does.
But sometimes you gotta move on...other worlds to discover...you know.
I think I've been extremely fortunate in the worlds I've lived thru. Motocross. Mountain Bikes. And thru it all to varying degree's - Cars. I think of it as a continuity of wheeled vehicles. I think of it as motion. As my souls running.
My climb toward the top has always been handicapped by my sensititivity to the now. I love the now. And the now being what it so often is, I love the past as much or more.
Like the bittersweet loves of my life, my time spent in each of these permutations resides forever in me despite the loss that was inevitable.
Like the single most satisfying love of my life, my time in the one world each of these their part comprise is alive and aloose.
That uneasiness with life aloose, before captured comfortably to be remembered, is no more emergent than in the instant between when I asked and when she said yes. Than in the instants between doubt and fulfillment I repeat lap after lap.
Uh-oh. Can you see it? The thrill of life on the edge. Repeat. Till bored?
Could happen.
But this isn't that story.
This is a story about The Story.
The Story about somebody elses racing, written in a magazine, that strikes the right chord, that shows us the world we love. Part of being in the right place at the right time. You can tell.
Over the last year I haven't read that story. Motorsport, the magazine, stopped doing it for me. My favorite writers went over the top or went missing as far as I was concerned. And now they've just changed their cover and format. Figured they needed to modernize. Needed a makeover. We'll see.
And Racecar Engineering too. It's been a long time since I've seen anything exciting there. That's a real heartbreaker.
Race Car Lunch isn't what it used to be either. I've pretty much quit going.
I've been thru this before. But it's different this time. This is it. I'm not moving on. It's up to me to go on without feeling like I'm being carried along by a magic current too.
It's not that racing isn't just a silly sport - it is. It's that I have chosen the wheel to live an important part of my life by. I don't know how else to live, and I'm not done living.
I haven't done it all. And I haven't seen it all. I've been a little disappointed lately, but I'll keep paying attention. Something's always coming along.
Maybe a little thing like Mark Hughes column in the latest Autosport.
He says there's a Video DVD coming out in a few weeks that might recharge a racers mojo a little. "50 Years of Formula 1 On-Board" from Ardennes Productions. This is the only link I can find: http://www.woolworths.co.uk/ww...tails
Fangio, Moss, Stewart, Depailler, Senna, Hakkinen. Maybe these guys can help me out a little.
Scott, who will have his Bontrager done in about a week...it's winter, but I can't wait to moto just a little

I just got my first motorcycle. Watching motorcycle racing NOW is probably about 10 times scarier than it used to be.

Had to Google it - had never heard of it.
I was just relating how at times you just know you're in the right place at the right time - there's a little zeitgeist.
Marketing and Buzz can attempt to force the bloom of the flower open as it were, but the real thing is unmistakeable IMHO.
Scott, who has a short list of big books...I want to get back to Spengler again someday, even though I doubt I'll find it any less impenetrable now...

Scott,
What you need is a kick *** weekend of great competition & great comraderie. The season ender here in NorCal H4 was just that. We had good hard racing from the back to the front. We had some good laughs. We had people helping each other. Sit back for a second & hit 'reset'.
I raced on Sat. It was so intense. I crewed while Derek raced my car on Sunday. It was just as exciting. We know that four more H4 racers will be joining us next year. There is a possibility of 3 more too! Can't wait.
