diff between bb4 and bb6 motors?
BB4 (92-96 Prelude)
Prelude model years 1992-1996.
BB6 (97+ Prelude)
Prelude model years 1997+.
can anyone tell me the difference between those two motors? and which one would work best in a 92 civic hatch CX

Nope.
BB4 motor is the JDM H22 motor. It's the regular JDM H22a motor. 200hp higher comp pistons, etc.
You are correct about the figures for the BB6 motor though

Compression. bb4 does not only use a JDM motor. 4th gen. Honda Prelude VTEC models run a H22A1 which is a USDM engine running 190 base. JDM running 200 base. The 5th generation prelude runs a H22A4 Motor, and it a lower compression H22 then the 4th gen VTEC.
Plus VTEC pulls harder in the 4th gen. Your better off with a A1 or a JDM H22A, unless you can build up the A4, but I wouldnt see why you would if you can get your hands on a JDM or a USDM A1.

well the place that has it for sale says its a bb4 JDM h22 92-96 motor. Is that the jdm motor ur referring to?? and what gen is it?? and how many horses / torque is it supposed to have?
Damn, some people REALLY need to make sure they know the facts BEFORE they post what they THINK... you are just confusing people, and spreading WRONG information....
BB1 thru BB4 - 4th generation prelude BODY CODE. The vtec model(sr-v;si-vtec) came with the ENGINE CODE: H22a1 (usdm 10.0:1 comp.)
BB6+ - 5th generation prelude BODY CODE. The ENGINE CODE was H22a4 (usdm 10.0:1)
the JDM H22a (closed deck) was 10.6:1 compression
The difference in the usdm a1 and the a4 is that a1 is a closed deck, and a4 is an open deck. The a4 also had longer journals.
Also 4th gen/h22a1 = OBD1 --- 5th gen/h22a4 = OBD2

If it is a 95 JDM H22, then it is an H22a which is 200hp (crank) 10.6:1 compression closed deck OBD1
will work fine in your civic with lets say.. the hasport mounts and driveshaftshop axles.

I shouldnt talk, unless I get all the facts, but from what I understand, 1994 was the best year for the Prelude running a higher compression motor then any of the other 4th gen's STOCK. I dont have actual proof. I track my car alsmot daily, and most of the competition is skilled pro street drivers, my car has outperformed every Honda I have gone up agenst, except for the turbo cars.
Prove me im wrong. I wont get but hurt.
APC
H22A1 (Number indicated USDM model) = 4th generation VTEC
H22A4 = 5th Generation Prelude S and SH model.
H22A (No number indicated JDM) Only found in Japan. Highest Compression.

what year did the h22a end? (the obd1 one) some people post and say 92-95, others say 92-96. I just want to be clear on which it is so i can specify the years I can use.
Holy **** people. 10 people with 10 different answers
original poster: ask one specific question at a time. If you want to put a motor in a 92 hatch get a JDM H22a, or a 92-95 H22A1. H22A1 in 96 is OBDII but it is the same motor, just different oil pump and distributor/wiring harness
your initial premise is a little skewed..the BB4 was never offered in north america, and around the world the BB4 chassis does not have a consistent engine either.
USDM land got the BB1 = H22A1 , BB2 = H23A1, BA8 = F22A1
In Japan the BB4 was the H22A 2ws, BB1 was 4ws anyway...
All JDM 'regular' H22a motors have 10.6:1 compression and 197hp (200ps). Yes all of them from 1991-2001. So it really doesn't matter which one you get power-wise. It also doesn't matter from an OBD perspective as you will be buying an external coil OBDI distributor anyway so who cares which motor you get.
