We do that stuff in the Car Audio World to strengthen our electrical systems. We call it the "Magic Three" or "Big Three."
Recently, companies have been offering kits for this purpose, as it actually seems to improve performance in High RPMs, If I recall, one company did Dyno Test before and after on a Volvo, and it does help.
I'll make it easy for you.
4 awg Wires, Crimp Connectors:
Battery - to Ground.
Battery + to Alternator
Engine to Chassis.
Ta-da! Best improvement you can make for >$20 and an afternoon.
Leave the old wires if you can, and using over 4awg (2, 0/1 awg) gives negligible benefits at such small lengths.
If you can, Get a "Cross Peen" Sledgehammer to make the crimps, works like a charm, otherwise a good 'ol hammer works too. I solder my ends w/ a MAPP gas torch too.
If you want, ACE hardware sells 4awg Crimp terminals by the Nuts/bolts, but that are not Gold, and will corrode, so if you go this route, hit the spots with a dap of Di-electric grease.
Worst case scenario, you've improved you're electrical system...
