how do you test the compression on a GSR?

Yep, anyone can do it.
Hit up your local parts store and get a compression tester (about $30)
Pull all the plugs out of your engine, remove the ECU fuse, (to eliminate fuel being introduced during test) sit in the car, open the throttle all the way, and crank it for 4 (That's 4) full crank revolutions. Then stop. Read the number on the gauge, then go to the next cylinder.
Write down the numbers staring with cylinder 1 (closest to the timing belt)
They should all be within 5% of eachother. If not, then you need to do a leakdown test. (have a shop do this)
