Default ATS comp lites, trying not to jack the Toyo thread

This could be old news, but I think I should post up this info because I know there are lots of people scratching their heads on how to get 15x8's for cheap.

They are available from Discount Tire for $103 dollars each in 15x8, 4x100 +30. Yes, that's right, and that's with shipping included, and you even get a choice of colors between black, silver and bling gunmetal. Only downside is the wait time which could by more than 2 months depending on how often they order wheels from Germany. Right now is a good time to order them for me since it's my off season, so I bought two of them.

First of all, my current autocross setup.

15x6.5 +42 and 225/45-15 Hoosier R3S03 on the front.

6.5(width) - 42mm/25.4mm(offset) - 6.5/2(wheel centerline) = 1.6" from hub face to outer rim lip.

The hoosiers stick out precisely 7/8ths of an inch from the lip of the rim, or .875"

Total distance from hub face to outer most point on the wheel/tire combo = 2.475"

These fit with a lot of room to spare with somewhat aggressively rolled fenders and a very low (-2.5 degrees of camber all from ride height) car.

8(width) - 30/25.4mm(offset) - 8/2(wheel centerline) = 2.82" from hub face to outer rim lip.

That means I'll need 2.82-2.475" = 0.345" more clearance for these wheels than my old wheels with 225 Hoosiers on them assuming I'm using the new wheels with a 205 that doesn't have tread which extends beyond the limits of the wheel, which is the plan since it's going to be on street tires next year.

Even if I do end up needing to machine the wheel hub face a few mm to a better offset for use with the 225 Hoosier or even the 205's, it'll still be a freaking bargain compared to the cost of custom wheels. If machining totally screws them up, they're 103 bucks each, so oh well! Yes, people do machine wheels for correct offset within a few mm safely, it's been done, but I'd have to have a look at the wheels to be sure how much material I'd have to play with.

Thoughts? Flaws in my logic?

Looks like the wheels should fit just fine

I don't see them listed on Discount's website...? I take it that I'd need to call them to order?

Christian, who's been looking for reasonably priced 15x8's...

When you mount a 225/45/15 Hoosier on an 8" rim, it is going to be quite a bit wider overall than if mounted on a 6.5 or 7" rim, and you will have to worry about clearnace to the rear trailing arm, as well as on fenders. You cannot assume the tire protrusion past the rim will stay the same.

all true points... however, I think the original poster and myself are just planning on running them up front. There may be some fender clearance issues but that'd just give me a good reason to go with larger "Rodney-esque" front fenders

Any idea on how much can safely be machined off of the hub to make them fit properly?

I'm guessing you will need an offset of closer to +42 for a EG/DC2.

Yes, I'm of the school of thought that believes 225's on the rear are pointless. As for fitment with 225's on the front, the new hoosier sticks out about half an inch from an 8.5" wheel so I'm not sure what it'd look like on an 8. We're obviously ballparking here without the wheels in hand, but it seems like a good solution and machining would help some if it's not good with the 225's. 205 sreet tires are my destination anyway for next year.

RJ: I'll take some good pics and resurrect this thread when I get them to my door. I can't really say without them and of course discount tire would say "don't do that!" if asked. I doubt it's more than 5mm.

UPDATE:

Frick! My salesperson at Discount Tire just called me and told me they've stopped carrying ATS, which means they've stopped ordering, which means no more shipments from der Vaterland.

So who else carries ATS?

The Discount Tire Direct site says they are only 15 X 7s.

I know what the site says, these are special order, but now Discount Tire has axed ATS completely from its product line.

A 15x8 ET30 would have backspacing of about 5.25". I dont think you'd be able to go much deeper than that on the inside without rubbing something.

15x8 +42 wheels fit on Todd00's car, with 205/50/15 Azenis.

Cool. Good to know. Front and rear?

Also FWIW, a 205-60-13 Z211 is over 9" wide when on an 8" rim. I never realized just how much a tire gets wider on a fat-*** rim until I tried it.

http://www.ats-wheels.com/

Under motorsport wheels, the DTC Touren-Wagen (aka TDC competition elsewhere on their site, not sure if it's the same) racing wheel specs 20-25 offset and 13-14lbs

Also found this site: http://www.advancedautosport.com/wheeldeal.htm which does not mention any offsets but posts 13.6lbs weight for the 15x8

Havent found any US dealers so far...

I run a 5" backspace on my 13's and am close to rubbing... I think you're right that 5.25" would be pretty much the max.

Why don't you just give the OEM a call?

ATS Stahlschmidt & Maiworm

ATS Group produces alloy wheels at sites in Germany, Poland, South Africa and the USA for leading global car manufacturers such as DaimlerChrysler, BMW, Mitsubishi, General Motors, Porsche and Ford.

The Stalowa Wola plant which employs about 800 people has a production capacity of around 3-million wheels a year, as well as 500,000 bedplates (for General Motors). The facility represents an investment to date of about e 50-million.

The USA plant of ATS in Auburn, Alabama, currently employs 125 people with an ultimate production capacity of 2.4 million wheels employing 300 people.

That's a good idea.

I actually found a dealer in the US that caters to VW and Audi guys, but they ask for $270 a pop for the 15x8 4x100 +30's. At that price I might as well pay the extra 70 bucks each to get the offset I want from a custom manufacturer or Volk.

Rich, who thinks he might have to stop banging his head against the wall and skip to ramming it straight through...

EDIT: I wonder how the Germans like it in Alabama?
