Default My car broke down tonight :(

So I was driving through campus and all of a sudden my check engine light came on and my car died. Lately I've heard a weird rattling sound between 1500 and 2500 RPM's, but I didn't think it was anything very bad. After my car broke down it would try to start, but wouldn't turn over. I know NOTHING about cars. A guy who stopped checked out stuff with his limited knowledge and checked the starter and it was working and so was my fuel pump. Any clue what could have caused this? It's been towed to the mechanic's and I'm going to talk to them tomorrow morning. Aaaahh!!!!!

haha, my ex did all of my work and we've been broken up for 6 months and he didn't touch my car for a while before that, so I'd say...... over a year, at least. It's bad, I know.

I'm so scared to let someone else work on my car, but I guess they know what they're doing. I'll keep ya posted.

My ex called me just a few minutes ago and said that it sounds like it might be something in the distributer or something with "coil" in the name, sorry, don't know much about cars again. I'm sad!

Well I just went and talked to the mechanics, but they don't even think that they can look at it until tomorrow so I'm just waiting for their call. I'm hoping it's a nice one

Is it trying to turn over or just clicking?

Almost sounds like your ignitor just died.

EDIT: If you can check your codes using this thread

We may be better able to help you.

My recommendation is to get back with the ex. Put out for a few days, he'll fix the car!

It tried to turn over and made that reving sound, but it wouldn't all the way. My car's at the mechanic's now so I can't check codes. We'll see what I find out

Well, next time the check engine light comes on, you can just go to a auto parts store and they can check what's wrong (by the code that the computer threw). Most guys at a auto parts place would probably jump at the chance to....if ya sweet talk em!

haha, the only thing with that is that I live in a town of 6,000 people and it was 9:00 at night so our auto parts store was closed and I had to get my car off of the shoulder since you're not allowed to park on that street. I'll keep that one in mind, but hopefully there wont be a next time

Well, I just got off the phone with the mechanic. I broke my timing belt. They can't tell if I bent any valves until they replace the timing belt. So, so far, it's going to cost me $300 to replace the timing belt. If I bent the valves, it's going to cost another $800-$1000 to replace them Keep your fingers crossed that I only broke the timing belt.

damn. if you kept on trying to crank it, then you bent valves.

buy a used head. it would be better IMO.

You can get a new engine and transmission for that amount, so keep that in mind when they're finished bleeding you.

yeah, we did my swap for about that much, my problem is that I don't know enough about cars to do a whole swap. My ex is the only one I know and I am almost positive that he wouldn't want to help me out that much by doing a swap for me. This is when I wish I had helped him work on my car more so I'd know how to do it

Depends on the type of swap.

the shop that I"m at I'm sure wouldn't do a whole swap. They're just some hodunk shop in the tiny town that I live in. So if they did it I'm sure they'd charge an arm and a leg since they want to charge $1000 just to replace valves
