Default Critique: I laid a few beads down.. Noobie welder.

Only my 4th day of welding so be kind.

Oxy-Acetylene welding using a #3 tip, I tried a #1 and #2 tip but I didn't get enough penetration and my welds weren't uniform at all.

#3 tip works for me, seems like I like to work hotter and faster.

All welds are w/ 1/16" M/S plates.

Here is w/ 1/16" M/S rod...

Another...

This one is w/ 3/32" M/S rod.

I know nothing about oxy-acetylene welding however I can say just from experience welding that your spacing looks solid but your pause time looks like it varies. I noticed that some of the welds are wider, but becuase of your angle on the camera it could be becuase you did not place the rod into the same spot at the same angle.

My guess, though, is you melted more rod than usual.

Looks like the pause time varies b/c i pause to reposition my hand on the rod b/c i start to feel the flame when my hand gets closer to the flame so as I lay the bead I find myself stopping to "grab more rod" - repositioning my hand.

slow down a little bit more, as you can see the weld is concave which often isnt exactly what your looking for, allow for a little more metal to melt into the weld to create more a convex or flat weld surface.

You need to slow down and use a smaller tip, get more even transition, weld even amounts of legs among both plates, try to get rid of the undercutting the base metal, and you need to add more filler rod.

Thanks for the tip, I have a diagram similar to that and it also shows different radius'.

The thing is when I use a smaller tip, I tend to too too fast or too slow I can't get the "pace" going w/ the "molten pool". I end up burning through or not getting enough penetration.

As for rod.. I find myself using about 20-25" of 1/16" rod for the T-joint you see there

I'll try using a #2 tip again and see how it goes.

I'm not using a "welder", its oxy-acetylene welding you use gas and a torch.

I'm guessing your using R60 1/16 rod filler. That's normal to use up that much rod. The reason your burning through the metal is that your either too close, too much heat because of the #3 tip, or your waiting too long.

Remember, The metal should be preheated with a small weld pool starting with a small tack with the rod. When you try to do a "T" joint the torch should be moving in a horse shoe movement with the rod going in between the two ends of travel with it moving side to side of the two tips(right hand moving >'horse shoe' and the left hand with rod doing the opposite '<'. The torch should be pointed into the "root," with a 5~15 degree angle perpendicular to it, and the rod shouldbe traveling a little above the "root" where the Rod filler will capilary attract towards the weld pool.

I don't burn through w/ a #3 tip, I burn through using a #2 tip its wierd.

both sides are tacked before I start to weld the whole T-joint. My torch moves constantly moving in the motion you said. Torch is in the proper postion as well as where I add rod.

I need to get more uniform and work w/ a #2 tip more or move faster w/ a #3 tip.

speeding up is a very easy habit to pick up when starting out , slow down and they will be much better.

I had "SLOW!!" written on the inside of my helmet for the longest time.
