Brake pad for the street/autoX...Hawk HPS vs. HP+
Hey guys, I am going to replace the rotors, pads, and lines on my G2.
For the rotors, you can't beat the performance/ value of the Brembo OEs.
For the lines, I'll get whatever set is closets to $100 and has a nylon/plastic covering over the SS (suggestions?).
However, for the pads, I want to get some really nice ones. I've heard good things about Hawk, but I won't be able to go to a track, and the car will only see streeet and autoX driving. I am afrais that the HP+s are too aggressive for the street and will have to heat up and such. How do the HPSs compare? Also, there are no Hawk pads made for the G2 rear brakes, so I'd have to put AEM brakes or Axxis on the rear. Or I could slap on some EBC Greens around each corner and have the same brake pad front and rear.
WHat do you guys think? Basically, I am just looking for differences between HP+ and HPS (possible the EBC Greens) and I didn't find anything useful in the search.
Thanks

Well, the Porterfields, though very sweet pads, are more than twice the price of the Hawks.
I've also been told that the Porterfields are not recommended for the street due to the substantial heat up needed. I would say they are for track only (even if occasionally on the street).
Thanks though...

we are talking about a G2 here. not all brakes are offered for G2's
GSpeedR, the Front Hawk STREET pads dont have much bite, but they keep your alloys cleaner. Wayy cleaner than stock replacement pads. They are probably the cleanest pads ..cleaner than EBC greens. If you get AEM rears, it'll seem that you have more brake level in the rear. I found out the hard way.. into a grass median going 70mph. AEM's have more bite but emit more dust than the hawk fronts.

Quick 200K Mile Motor: my rims are pretty old and slightly beat up so brake dust is not the #1 priority on my list. However, the bite of the pad is. Would you say that the HP+ pad would have a stronger bite while still being practical for the street?

I'm pretty sure that they do. I believe that http://www.b17a.com sells them. It could be the HPSs but I'm almost positive that someone on G2IC has HP+s.
I have the Hawk HPS on the front of my G2 Teg and love them. I talked to a guy at Pegasus racing about choice between HPS and HP+ and he said the HP+ need a little more heat than HPS before they bite but HP+ are still streetable. He uses the HP+ on his escort GT (mazda version) and loves them. While dust is not a huge issue for me, it does not seem worse than what was on the car before.
I put stock Acura pads on the rear at the same time and these work fairly well although the rears do not do much for stopping. Carbotech can build pads for any application using their pad materials or Hawks if you want to spend the coin. Just because it is not listed in a catalog does not mean it is not available...
Good luck

I have HP+ front on my Civic and they kick ***. A lot of dust, but you don't care about that so they should be perfect! Good luck dude. They are way better than the HPS Street.
Porterfields kick ***..
the R-4s is a great street pad
the R-4 is a great track pad..
and porterfield can make any brakepad for any car

I think I'm going to choose between the HPS and HP+ for the fronts. I'm not sure what to put on the rears though. Maybe some AEM pads?
I've used both Hawk HPS and HP+ for street/auto-x and there's NO comparison..... the HP+ kicks serious butt! They require no heat-up to speak of and are so much better than the HPS that I'll never go back to HPS.
And BTW, the brake lines you're looking for are Teflon coated. I have the black Teflon-coated Goodrich and they are awesome as well.

HP+ is a little much for the street, in my experience. Especially if you live/drive in an urban area. The HPS is probably a good bet. If you can lock the wheels with the pads you already have, you're not going to stop any faster. But the upgraded pad will theoretically make your brakes more consistent (resisting fade better than what you have) and probably reduce pedal pressure per brake torque unit. Hope this helps.

Mike P: Well, I'm pretty sure that I could lock up the wheels with the HPS, Brembo OEs, and SS lines. I guess I'd like to have the best amount of bite availiable without it becoming uncomfortable (ie. squeaking, heat-up time).
Everyone's giving me different opinions regarding the Hawk pads, but please keep the info coming.
HP+/Carbotech Panther Plus: amazing bite and fade resistance, but heavy dusting, shorter life span, and probably too rotor agressive for a street car.
HPS: Light dusting but better bite and fade resistance than an OE pad, but I found them to squeel more than my liking.
I just use the OE pads for the street. Required pedal pressure is way high compared to any of the above pads, but the car still stops fine, noise free, and very little dusting, plus I drive like there's an egg on my brake pedal and can get close to 80K miles on a set of OE pads. If you do decide to track your car, swapping in a hi-po pad for just a day or two is no problem.

Hey Chris, I highly suggest giving Andie a call at Carbotech Engineering. Here's their website address: http://www.carbotecheng.com/main.htm
Here is some other posts in the competition forum that may help you decide:

-Asking about which pads/rotors for STS
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=100043
-Mostly about rotors
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=92945
-Mostly a rehash of brake fluids
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=91191
-This is probably the most relevant. I posted this on advice for brake fluids and which DOT approved SS lines to use.
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=91602
-Great info on brake fluid. (Read only, but lots of educated information)
Well, I hope all this information helps. Unfortunately, my original post on the discussion of brake pads has since been archived (deleted), and had a lot of good information. If you don't get decent answers here, first call Andie at Carbotech (see above) and then possibly post in the competition forum if all else fails. Ask nicely, and thee shall receive.
