1991 Accord Automatic Transmission Behaving Funny - Slipping or Spiking? Any Help? Just got the ca
I just got a 1991 Accord and it's in pristine condition, but there are 2 problems. One the tint is coming off, and I think I can just get rid of that easily, but the second and more serious is that the transmission behaves a little funny:
The transmission seems to engage decently. Its a little strenuous to pull it out of park (I think its just different than the other car we have) and once you put it in drive and let off the brake, it kind of clunks into gear (as opposed to engaging while you still have the brake on).
The other strange thing is that it wont shift higher than almost 3500rpm. It'll get to 3200 rpm and shift gears, and if you floor it it'll only go up to 3200rpm and shift to the next one, and then once its at the top gear it won't shift down. It did shift down a couple of times but it just faked shifting down and didnt really. What I mean by this is that it revved for a brief second like it was going to shift to the lower gear, but the gear did not engage and it returned to the higher gear. It was really strange. Any Ideas? Anyone? I'm kind of helpless about it right now. I'll be checking the ATF tomorrow.
Edit: also, do any other cars share this engine or transmission?

It sounds like you need a new transmission. That one sounds like it is on the bottom of the down slope of failing.
The trans on my old 90 was very hard to pull out of park into drive. Finally it just died in traffic. Made the mistake of getting a "salvage" unit. To make a long story short, you need a new transmission.
i adjusted the throttle cable and replaced the transmission with honda ATF and the transmission works perfectly apart from taking a little energy to pull out of and return to Park. thanks for the, uh, info.
