Failed emmission in NJ today. A few questions.
I just bought a del sol with a ls motor in it for my g/f I took it to get inspected today and it passed everything except for one part of emmissions. The only part that failed was NOx. Standard is 1006 and my reading was 2297. When I was looking over the print out it had the car listed as a 93 accord. Will that model bring up different emmissions standard's?
Also does anyone know what to do to get this to pass ie lower that number. Would leaning it out a tad, lower that number or running high test? The car has a high flow cat on it I believe or some type of cat.
Also what is Nox and what does the actually measure?
I have never had to get emmissions in PA so this is all new to me. Any help would be great.
Thanks
Mods if this is in the wrong place feel free to move. I posted in the eg tech section but got no usefull info.

NOx is Nitrogex mono and di oxides. Its caused by too high of combustion temps. I took the egr off of my car, and my NOx went through the roof like that. Of course, thats what the egr is supposed to lower, so I guess it was working.
Retard the timing is supposed to help with NOx. Fix the egr. Use octane boost (I've been told, haven't verified). Dump a bottle of "Guaranteed To Pass" into the gas tank. Old style catalytic converters (early 80s and earlier) used to create NOx if you were running too rich, so a new cat helps that out, but I doubt thats your problem.

no a 95 LS does not have a EGR valve.
and mods done to the car? what were the other limits and readings for HC and CO%?
i would say just bump the timing down a bunch but without knowing what mods and what the other readings are im just guessing.

The motor is totally stock. Just intake, header, and exhaust.
Here are the other readings:
HC Standard is 132 reading was 113
CO% Standard is .73 reading was .70
I have not checked the timing yet to see what it is set at. Do you think leaning it out a little bit and retarding the timing will lower that number? If need be I can hook up my fjo from my car to see what the a/f is.

bump the timing back (retard) and take it for a good hard blast before your test. if you can turn the timing back 3-5deg
from the looks of the other readings it look like it wasnt properly warmed up before the test.
good luck

that is what is wierd. we drove it for atleast 30 mins or to the inspection station. We did have to sit there and wait for them to pull it in but I left it running the whole time.
hmmmm........if the converter is old and tired it might not be working properly.
it looks like from those readings that it's running with a dead or cold cat-converter. if the converter is working properly those numbers should be all much lower.....

i will try and find a used cat. The seller of the car said this cat was brand new like a month or so old. He could have been bsing me for all I know. Would running a stock header help lower the numbers?
the stock manifold might help a bit but not that much....
if everything else is working properly (o2 sensor. clean air filter, PCV system) then its probably the cat. check and set the timing also.

I failed also for the same reason. I did a small tune-up; spark plugs, cleaned the crap off the cap and rotor, air filter, fuel filter. Also I threw in 2 bottles of HEET (takes water out of gas) into my 1/8 full gas tank as some people suggested to me. My numbers dropped significantly from all that.

The plugs and air filter look brand new. But I will try the other things you suggested. Also did you run 93 octane?
Does anyone know how to get the wavier? How much money must you spend before they give you the wavier.

I just ran regular 87 or whatever octane. It's not really going to affect emissions and I've actually heard of people getting worse emissions in their LS's with higher octane gas.
I can check to see what the waiver is when I get home. I think it's somewhere between 300-500.
Also, remember to keep your receipts for any parts. They check that on your re-inspection.

I think that you're not supposed to leave the car running....It causes the gases to build up in the cat...a friend of mine works at one of the NJ inspection stations and he had to pass my old teg by doing the test in 2nd gear to get enough backpressure to blow out all those gases from my cat so the sniffer couldn't pick them up or something. If nothing else works go back and leave your car off while you'r waiting...it's worth a shot.
