I'm getting more and more interested in picking up a 250 to carve/mess around with and maybe hand it down to my future girlfriend.
What are actually out there? I'm interested in race rep looking ones only.
I know Cagiva used to make some exotic Duc style ones and that'd be nice but probably totally out of my range, as well as, impossible to find.
Also, what kinda horsepower and speed can I expect out of one of these?

Aprilia makes a nice 125cc 2 stroke that looks like true race bike. It is a 250 cc 4 stroke equivalent. http://www.aprilia.com/models0...4.jpg
Most of the decent 250cc bikes are two stroke. You won't be able to get a new one road legal, especially in California. However, there are some older two strokes that are already titled and registered around.
Not much. If you can step up to somehting a like bigger, and actually a fairly popular class, you can get into a 500. There is always the ninja 500, and the suzuki gs500. The older gs500e was a naked street figher of sorts, where the new gs500f is fully clothed, and not a bad looking bike. I think the price you would pay for a gs500f you would be better to step up to the sv650. I love mine, plenty fast, handles well, and is inexpensive, when it comes to sport bikes.
As mention before, there is the aprilla rs125, tz250 (yamaha 2 stroke), and a few others that I have probally over looked.

Nighthawk 250
15 whp, no speed. But good MPG, and a bulletproof motor.
I'm actually thinking of getting another one for around town errands.

Sorry but I just can't get myself to like the looks of the Ninja 250. One girl we ride with has one and seems like a whole lot of fun but I was looking more into the looks of a race rep.

I skimmed over this part of your post. A Nighthawk 250 wouldn't qualify then.

Are you talking about a 4 stroke 250 to just cruise around with or are you talking about a race 2 stroke 250 like the nsr or rs 250? The 2 strokes have about 45 hp at the rear wheel stock. Modded people get around 60-65. Remember these things weigh nothing and flick very easily with virtually no engine braking....
Man those things are fun at the track.

Nice bike
but I'm not quite ready to buy it right now. Gotta pay off some credit cards first.
