Default D-Series swapability

Ok, I'll be ordering my motor next week but before I do I wanted to ask if the D-Series motors and transmissions are swappable like the B-series motors.

Most likely I'm just getting another D16A6 to replace my 200k mile ******* i have now but I was curious if I could get an EX motor (not sure the code) from a 96 or so Civic and bolt my cable transmission up to it.

Most likely thats not even worth the trouble with wiring and all but since this is my daily driver/beater I dont want to spend the money on a b-series. Just curious...

Yes, you can replace a d-series motor with another d-series motor and both up to the existing tranny. A SOHC Vtec in 89 CRX will be pretty quick. Plus, there are a lot of upgrades for that motor

Hypothetically if I get the SOHC Vtec motor how would I go about wiring it? Is there an OBD0->OBD2 conversion harness or something? I'd need the EX Ecu no doubt. Also have to switch out the dizzy?

Sorry for the questions but this is my first honda so I'm kind of new to this.

Ok so all that just went out the window... Picked up a DOHC ZC for the price of the A6 because they sold out of A6's. The ZC is just a D16A1 right? If that is the case will any d-series exhaust manifold bolt to it? What about clutches? I have a new clutch and flywheel for the D16A6 because I thought I was going to get the A6... Will it still fit or will I have to exchange it?

I guess what I'm looking for is... Are the D motors interchangeable like the B-series motors? Like if I get headers for an A6 will they still bolt to the ZC?

I also read quite a bit about the ZC not being as reliable as the A6 or Z6... Something about bearings failing or something. I was planning on turboing (already have it all ready) but if the motor won't be able to take it then I'll hold off and rebuild the A6. Also read that you run a good possiblilty of throwing a cylinder postion code because you have to redo the dizzy plug and add the exhaust cam sensor. Is there anyway around this?

I know virtually nothing about d-series/zc motors as you can probably tell.

Thanks for your help and patience.

1) In concept it is LIKE the A1 but they only share some simularities.
2) Any D-Series exhaust manifold will bolt on, but you will have them slightly port match it as the exhaust ports on the ZC are ever so slightly off.
3) As long as your using the same transmission you will be fine with the clutch and flywheel
4) The ZC will be as reliable as you treat it. If you just stick it in off the lot, expect it to be as reliable as a used motor can be. If you rebuild it though, it will be running with a clean slate.
5) You can get around the wiring issue by making sure that you wire it correctly in the first place, triple checking all your connections, and not skip on OEM plugs when hooking it all back together. That is how I do my wiring for modifications and no codes yet

the DOHC ZC is not a D16A1 - it is more like the A6 modified for the DOHC head - most external components like clutch, flywheel, transmission, starter, alternator, engine mounts, throttle body and water pump are the same as the A6 - the distributor and spark plug wires are like the A1 - the timing belt is same as 88 Prelude Si 2.0L - B-series timing gears work fine - the valve train (valves, springs, rockers, etc.) are the same as A1 - any d-series exhaust will bolt right to the ZC head, however, the exhaust ports in the head are shifted up about 3mm from the other D-series heads - some aftermarket headers will work as is and some may need a little grinding to match the ports in the head - not being reliable is a myth, they are essentially the same as the A6, except higher compression and different head - we have had one for 5 years and it is still going strong - as far as turboing it, no different than A6 - crank and rods are the same

Exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by driven &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">If you have $1000 and enjoy replacing bottom-end bearings, DOHC ZC. </TD></TR></TABLE>. I guess that kind of game me the wrong impression.. Just seems like people go through ZC motors faster than anything else... Oh well we'll see what happens.

I also forgot to ask about head gaskets.. Who makes metal head gaskets for the ZC. I'm looking to drop the compression a little for boost...
