they are interchangable but you have to use the clutch and flywheel from that tranny. 1988 si are different than 1989-91. At least that is what i got fromt he obx lsd post. I could be wrong. Do a search for obx lsd that might help also. They talk about he different si trannys. You just need to look at the shaft for the spline count.

Bah look at the end of the input shaft. No rings around the shaft is a 88, 1 ring is a 89, and 2 is a 91.
88 models have different spline counts on the input shaft and have to use a different clutch disc on them. 89-91 trannies are compatible with the 89 clutch or 90+ clutch.

I cant count the splines when the tranny is still in the car....
Ive only got the 1 tranny sitting infront of me
Nothing can be said with the numbers off of teh tranny?

Three ways to identify an 88-91 tranny:
1. Spline count on the input shaft will determine if it is '88, or '89-'91.
2. Carrier bearing diameter on the differential. 40mm ID bearings = Si. 30mm bearings = Dx or HF.
3. Pull the fill plug. Mark one tooth on the ring gear. Rotate the tranny and count the teeth. 68 teeth on the ring gear = Si.
The numbers on the tranny are pretty much useless.

really I was always positive you could tell by the numbers
Anyways, what about the number I gave for the engine, they must tell you then engine year right?
Then that would tell me if I have a 88 or 89-91 tranny
Then Ill just try and get ahold of the seller again and find out what year this tranny is
Need some help

No, it doesn't. It is considerably smaller. I have one torn apart in my garage. I will count it tonight.

In CA we have 3.25:1, or 65 tooth ring, with a 20 tooth countershaft. All of my research leads to a 2.95:1 ratio for 49 state.

All of the numbers you have given are serial numbers, and are nearly impossible to cross.
You do have a date code on the head, in a round stamp, near where you found the PM3. It is just above the exhaust ports.

I already told you how to tell what year the tranny is. Count the damn splines on the input shaft already.

21 Splines = '88
20 splines = '89+
If the original head is on the engine, it will have a date stamp on the front, just below the valve cover.
