Search=Down. Smog=Failed...help
Well, I'm having a great day! Just got to pay a shop 60$ for absolutely nothing! Oh, except for them to tell me my car failed smog! YEAH!
Having a 91 Civic Si, I had the displeasure of going to a "test only" station here in ca for a smog check. Everything on this car is stock, and it failed. One can only assume what the problem is, and the genious smog tech could only be about as vague as a presidential canditate answering a question in a debate. I'm gonna post the results, and if anyone has any bright ideas I'd love to hear em.
15mph
rpm: 1862
%c02 meas: 14.2 %02 meas: 1.4
HC (ppm) Max: 130 Ave: 31 Meas: 34
C0(%) Max: .80 Ave: .10 Meas: .08
Trouble
NO(ppm) Max: 835 Ave: 237 Meas: 993
25mph everything the same basically still failed
NO(ppm)
Max: 774 Ave: 199 Meas: 1001
My only assumption would be cat converter, which is a lovely thing to replace and i would assume expensive, but if anyone has any ideas Im open to hear em.
<---Not in a good ******* mood
Thanks

retard your timing about 5 or so degrees. Unless they check your timing as part of the smog check(gay *** Cali tests).
it will raise your hc slightly, not affect your co much, and lower your NOx.
basically you're reducing burn time, combustion pressure, and heat(heat= Nox).

and very very easy to install.

Correct timing is part of the test here in Cali. I just got a catalytic converter put on my 91 for $99.00 installed. I have a JDM d15b and passed with flying colors. This was also at a test only station
anyone know off hand what stock timing should be on these cars? On the form it says 13 BTDC which doesnt sound right to me.

either way they're going to make sure it's at the spec they have... no point wondering.
if your cat is old a new one will bring your numbers down, and then after you pass put the old one back on and save the new one for the next time you test.. that's what I do.

just FYI for everyone that doesn't know, NOx are created by high heat in the combustion chamber, this can be caused by too advanced timing, motor runing hot due to coolant problems, or a lean mixture, or a combination of all of them. On cars with an EGR, a faulty component in the EGR system is the most common cause.
THe easiest way and most common way for NOx to go up on our ****, since we don't have EGR, is a lean condition. Except with us hondafags, when we mess with the timing and go a bit too far..
Any timing advance creates higher pressure, and that = more heat. But it goes up exponentially as you advance it.
