Flywheel questions???
I am interested in resurfacing my fly wheel, lightening it a little. What are the advantages or disadvantages of doing this, and what kind of shop would do this for me.
Far as I know, resurfacing will get you smoother shifts for awhile. Lightening it means removing material, possibly strength if done incorrectly, but also removing rotating mass. This lets your engine rev quicker and work less hard getting there, so you put more HP at the wheels.
Resurfacing:
Pro: Smooth surface is good for your clutch i.e. the disc or pucks, because it wears it down evenly.
Con: You're removing the harder part of the flywheel, and exposing the softer inside. Thus, it won't be long until the surface is uneven again, and you cannot keep on resurfacing the same area.
Lightened Flywheel.
Pro: Brings you up to higher RPMs faster.
Con: RPM drops faster between shifts. This is particularly a larger issue when running boost. Also, some complain about having a sensitive launch/acceleration from standstill in traffic i.e. stalling.
--> If you have the money, buy a new aluminum flywheel.
