Default 94 Honda Accord Passing gear sticking around 5000rpms

I am a new honda owner, my first honda.
i just bought a 1994 honda accord ex, 4 door sedan, 2.2L, 4cyl, non vtec. It has been well maintenced\serviced and kept up, i am the second owner, before me it was a 70 year old mans who had it and it only has 115,000kms on it not miles.

here is my problem... when i go to put it in passing gear on the highway it goes in good, but it sticks at about 5000 rpms and it won't come out of it until you let off the gas, is this normal or no?! because i really don't like that, it seems to me that it should kick out of it, itself?!
someone please help me!!

thanks

After looking at the shift chart in my 94 Accord manual, my interpretation is that it should stay in 3rd after a kickdown to full throttle until perhaps 140 kph (86 mph). In other words it could be normal,...if you're holding the throttle wide open. Partial throttle should reduce that shift speed substantially.

I assume you are not getting a flashing D4 or S light when this happens. If yes, you need to access the code to see if you have a trans problem. If shifts are normal otherwise, I would suspect this performance is correct.

good luck

haha ok thanks

no i'm not getting a flashing D4 light when i do this!!

i don't know it's weird, when i kick the car down after doing a steady speed like 80 or 100kms and i want to pass a car or something on the high way, the power is there to pass the car, it just sticks and stays at like 5000rpms and its like reving out, it will keep doing this until you let off the gas, and then kick it down again, i don't like how it does that...

1994 Honda Accord EX, sedan, automatic
the valve cover doesn't say V-TEC
just the honda emblem and 16 valve

so i'm guessing non v-tec?!
