Side air bag sensor location 2002
The side air bag sensor is on your passenger seat on the right side of it, there is a sensor there where if just amount of pressure is applied it will alert it and turn the air bag off for the side off as long as that sensor is set off.....for instance if a kid was sittin there and fell asleep and slouched to the side onto that sensor it will pick that up and turn it off encase you get hit from the side so that air bag doesnt pop whiles sleepin there sendin him flying inside the car

It depends on the severity of the impact. It takes a pretty good jolt to set them off.
