Default What D-Series Tranny...

I am going to get a ZC w/ the ZC tranny, but from what I've heard it's not the best on highway gas because of the final drive.

Now, what people seem to do with their B16s is get an LS 5th gear to lower the highway RPMs. Is there a D-Series option for this? I have a CRX DX tranny and I was thinking of using the 5th gear and counter out of that... but is there an even better option? I think the HF only came in 4spd but I'm not sure. If it came in 5 I'm assuming that would be an even better bet, but all I seem to see is HF 4spd.

Or is the ZC just fine on highways. All you ZC guys, I need some input!

Thanks!

you can play around with this; it may help you pick a different tranny

HF comes with a 5spd.. they dont come with a 4spd manual..
only the standard(std) hatches come 4spd..

My friend hit 100mph in 3rd gear at only 4500-4700 rpm with the HF tranny..

I have a zc 1-4 si 5th and si final drive transmission. The RPMs are just shy of 4K @ 80 mph.
Fuel economy is roughly 35mpg with the AC on.
the SI's final drive is shorter but the ZC's 5th gear is shorter, either way I don't see a big difference in fuel consumption. The only place I do see less MPG is during intown driving because I tend to lead foot it too much.

I'd stick with either the stock ZC (which is pretty much just a hot DX tranny) or I'd go with the 1-4 ZC gears and the SI 5th and final. If you put in a HF 5th, the jump from 4th gear to 5th gear will be too extreme as your engine's RPMs will drop so much you will be out of the power band and find yourself down shifting often.
