Yes on VTEC motors from what i know, if the CEL come on, sometimes vtec doesnt work or doesnt work as hard. Its a good idea to check the codes to see what exactly went wrong.

check the code.. it could be your knock sensor.. that would cause the vtec not to kick in..

I dont know much about VTEC but I suspect if the CEL comes on, it puts the ECU in 'limp' mode keeping you outta VTEC

Yes its very possible. Your car is now running in "limp" mode. Get a new O2 or Cat.

Huh?! There's no level to the amount of VTEC that kicks in. It either works or it doesn't work.

LoL This guy is funny. Already so many people who said "yes" or "probably so" and he still asks the same question. Since everyone else is saying yes then it IS keeping your V-TEC from kicking in. Replace the O2 sensor and see if that wont fix your problem. ~_~

Check your flux capacitor.

No really, just replace the sensor and reset the ECU... go for a spirited drive.

What year is your car? If its obd-1 94-95 vtec will still work if the o2 SENSOR is not working or even disconnected.. I don't know about obd-2 cars.

There's been a lot of talk about checking the vtec code: how do you do that? I'm new to Vtec engines.

You check for computer codes... and sometimes the codes that it puts out are related to VTEC's operation.

Oh ok I gotcha now...the ECU?
how do you know when Vtec kicks in? i know all bout how it works and that (bar the codes of course...(!!) but is there that much of a noticeable increase in power when it does kick in? I've got a 1990 XSi with a B16A under the hood, and of course I get power when the revs go over 4000 and that, but is it that noticeable?
