Default help... 3rd gear pop-out

Yeah yeah, this is about the millionth thread about this but anyway... I was going to shift from 2nd to 3rd and for some reason it didn't go in all the way, I dont know why, maybe my hand slipped maybe a bad shift, I dont know. But the tach went up past redline... but I saw it and it only went to like 8300 or so I would say (this is an 04 Type S by the way). The power seems fine afterwords and everything but I when I got out while the car was running it sounds like there is a slight nock or something in the engine... coming from the valve cover. It isn't really loud or anything so I dont know if it has always been like that or what, am I being paranoid? What symptoms could I look for if I were to have bent a valve or something?

Thanks

That noise is normal. If you were going from 2nd to 3rd and it only went up to 8300 rpms you are fine. Fuel cut off is as 8200 rpm's so an extra 100 sould be fine. Hondata flash allows you to rev to 8500 rpm with no internal mods so if you did hit 8300 rpm's you are fine. Anything past 8700 rpm's with stock internals then you have a problem.

You can actually rev a Type S as high as 9K without problems. The type S has the same valve train as the DC5R which has a stock redline of 8600 and it won't touch valves till about 9200-9300.

BONK alex.

if you reached past redline just because you stepped on the gas really hard when the shifter wasn't actually in gear, then you didn't do any real damage, just added a little wear on the engine.

if you are in 3rd gear topping out and you shifted into 2nd gear, then that's a big broken engine.

3rd gear pop out is not uncommon. I get it sometimes. You just have to realize when you're in 3rd and when you're just notched and not in 3rd.

good luck in the future
