cage for EG SEDAN anyone???
I currently run a 93 civic four door in DC region Street mod soloII.
I know i dont NEED a cage, but I would like to do more HPDEs and maybe SOLO I (if my car can be legal/competitive in any class).
I've found that the bolt in cages 1) arent made to fit my car and 2) have questionable legality with different classes.
so I need to find a weld in I guess. I know of mitch piper, who makes great cages at extraordinarily high prices (not interested) I know there are others out there who can build strong and well fitted cages, but i dont know who!
anybody have any references for me?
also has anyone (with a sedan EG) tried to fit a bolt in cage made for an EK in there. The wheelbase and roof heights are about teh same.
thanks

dont even need a rollbar for soloII, but like i said i want to get into soloI (which currently requires a 4pt, but by 06' will require full cage).
anyway to use race harnesses, you need seats (according to SCCA even for a HPDE) to have seats you need a cage. SO for HPDEs with SCCA you either use stock seatbelts and seats and no cage or you get all of them. Currently i use del sol seats with a 5pt 3" harness, i woudltn give up a harness for anything.
beyond that, when competing in hill climbs (up a mountain road) or even time trials on the circuits, if you roll your car, w/o a full cage the chassis likely will be bent. if you have a full cage gusseted to teh chassis more than likely you'll end up w/ bent body panels, but an ok chassis.
DO I NEED TO EXPLAIN MYSELF ANYMORE?

Congrats on pissing all over another thread. You know you don't HAVE to press the Reply button right?
For the original poster... have you searched the archives yet? I know there have been quite a few cagebuilder threads over the last few years. I wouldn't have been paying attention to the recommendations from your area though. Are you looking for someone local, or would you consider traveling some?

Lose the ******* attitude.
Anyways I would take the car to Piper Motorsports in Manassas - and no where else. They do the best work in the area. Be prepared to pay for it, but dont comprimise safety.
IMHO, I would have them build a 4-point rollbar and then have it finished into a cage if you decide to go that route.

They are a BMW shop but roadrace technologies is in the area. Barry Battle does impeccable work. Again, be prepared to pay. Safe never = cheap.

Well look at it like this....
You said you don't want a bolt in cage for rule infringement and other determining factors. So that rules cheap out.
Then you come back and say you are not interested in going to a shop like Piper because it's to expensive?
Well you really need to make up your mind. Piper is probably one of the most popular places around here to go have a custom cage made (did not say the best....because, well he's not, but damn good none the less). So let's see here what do you want to do?
Just remember this you get what you pay for in this instance. So just like you said a roll cage is there to protect you and your car. So what kind of value do you not only place on your car, but your life? And to a much lesser extent chassis rigidity and competitiveness? It's like I don't understand how someone can blow there whole savings on the baddest crate engine and biggest brakes etc.... and then throw an autopower bar and a fire extinguisher in and call it a day.

you think Piper is expensive ?
you dont want a quote from me.

What is your price range ? In yo cal we are all incoproably spoiled so local cage builders usually charge about 75 bux a bar or for like an HC car around 15-1700 bux for 4130. For less than that you might try to find a miata spec builder since that is "supposed" to be the ultimate low cost series.
I know that in about 8-10 hours a really nice cage can be built ( however it seems most builders are lazy and it usually stretches into weeks ) for 8-10x the labor rate but somehow it's usally 2x that. Another thing you might look into is material. I was getting screwed to the tune of 13 bux a foot for 4130 for material costs when I found a local supplier that was in the 4 dollar range. I went from 500 bux to bout 150 for materials that way alone.
Also the fab forum or the nasaforums.com spec miata section may be good resources for a budget. I'm supprised Kirk does'nt offer anything though ?

You dont need 4130 - there's no advantage of using it for NASA or SCCA because there's no allowance for thinner wall tubing when using it.
A mild steel cage will run 1500-1700 from piper w/ nascar bars.

And the extra cost of material and tig welding is worth it?

Material cost if you buy it your self is only marginally higher, For me I have found it for even less at times. Local welders don't differentiate types of welding in there cost unless the material is unique like Ti Alloy's ect and I don't know much about that
