Default Turbo on a track car

Okay, have a question about having a turbo on a street/drag/track car. I know that turbos are best for drag applications but not really for roadtrack situations. I also know that it is better to lower the compression when turbocharging an engine.

Is it feasible to use a boost controller to have high boost for drag-type runs, but to reduce the boost to the point where you will have decent power but won't melt anything on a road track. Sorry if this question isn't worded well, it's 2 in the morning and I'm tired. Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm sorry, this actually should have gone under the F/I forum. DragII, would you mind moving it if you see this?
