ENHANCING THE COMMITMENT TO GRASSROOTS RACING A
FOCUS OF 2005 NHRA SUMMIT SPORT COMPACT DRAG RACING SERIES
GLENDORA, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2004) – The NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series reinforced, today, a commitment to grassroots racing by expanding its sportsman participation at sport compact events to include three new categories of competition.
In 2005, the NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series will feature three new sportsman classes designed and created to encourage drag racing enthusiasts of all levels to compete at the drag strip during eight of the 10 NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series events. The three new classes will be the Street Stock class, the Quick 16 class and a “Time Slip Only” class.
“NHRA is all about real racing, not only for the championship classes, but at every level of competition,” said Gary Darcy, vice president of marketing for NHRA. “We want to develop three new classes that will help us continue to grow interest at the grassroots level and encourage all Gen Y hot rod enthusiasts to bring their cars to the event and race them down the drag strip. It is important that we build the foundation of the sport through grassroots participation to ensure the long-term success of the series and industry.” The new classes will serve to compliment the existing sportsman classes which include Sport Front Wheel Drive, Sport Rear Wheel Drive and the E.T. bracket classes.
The creation of these three new classes is not only in line with NHRA’s long-standing mission to get kids off the street and discourage illegal street racing, but places a special focus to encourage participation at the grassroots level.
“Our feeling is that if NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series events can offer not only great championship racing and entertaining lifestyle elements but an opportunity for anyone to compete, we can ensure the sport’s success and increase grassroots participation. Further, this will reinforce growth in the sport compact industry providing additional platforms for sponsor participation.”
NHRA plans extensive grassroots marketing campaigns to drive awareness of these new sportsman-only classes in hopes that enthusiasts who have been attending as spectators will be able to take advantage of the opportunity to participate in the event.
The new Street Stock class will feature the same rules as the SPORT FWD class currently staged at NHRA Summit Sport Compact Series events, but with no power adders, and all cars must be registered, street legal, have full interiors and run on DOT radial street tires. In the works is a year-end bounty to be established for the fastest E.T. and the quickest cars for the entire year.
The Quick 16 class is designed to showcase the 16 quickest cars at an event that may not be eligible for any of the “heads-up” classes, and provides an alternative to standard E.T. bracket racing for competitors. The handicapped start, no-breakout format will equalize competition among the 16 cars while preserving the “first one to the finish line wins” concept.
The “Time Slip Only” class will compete on Saturday at NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series events with the quickest and fastest per make/model to win a special plaque. Based on the successful street legal programs being conducted all around the country at sanctioned NHRA Member Tracks, spectators who want a chance to race will be able to participate for only $5 more than the price of admission.
“NHRA Member Tracks are currently staging very successful NHRA Street Legal programs and the ‘Time Slip Only’ Class is a designed to bring that concept to the NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series,” said Darcy.
The NHRA is the premier sanctioning body for sport compact drag racing. It presents the 10-race, $2.1 million NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series at eight tracks across the country from April-October. The series features the largest guaranteed sport compact event purse of more than $26,000 paid out per event. In addition, the series offers a year-end championship fund of $144,000, along with more than $1.7 million in contingency payouts. The series is highlighted by its five championship classes (Pro RWD, Pro FWD, Modified, Turbo Magazine Hot Rod and Honda Tuning All Motor). In addition, and at all eight of the stand-alone NHRA Summit Sport Compact Series events, the NHRA Stylefest presented by Sony Xplod will bring a compliment of the lifestyle and entertainment elements synonymous with today’s sport compact scene. Based on the what javier was talking to me about at the track on sunday, he was mentioning 2400lbs for 4cyl and 2700lbs for 6cyl.... I told him I felt those weights where to high especially for a 6cyl, but he wants the class to be like full interior street cars... problem is... there aren't many lol
I guess we will just have to wait and see the outcome
