Default DOHC vs SOHC

i'm just wondering if i'm going to turbo my '03 civic HX, does it make too much of a difference performance-wise if i turbo a DOHC or an SOHC?

by the way, my engine is a D17A (i think)

and i'm thinking if i should waste money to buy a K20A or not

I don't work with the newer Civics a lot but if you've got the money build and boost a K20. They're going to have a lot more potential than the D but it all depends on what you wanna spend and how much power you want.

Buying a k20 is definately NOT a waste of money, you're not going anywhere with your stock motor boosted

If you have the money by the K and if you don't have that much by a B. A boosted LS is fast and fairly cheap.

A B series swap is going to be a little more work than a K in an '03 Civic.

but then i went to the gurrett website and they showed that their turbo kit can boost a D17A up to 325 hp and 450 for K20A

if i just buy the turbo kit for my stock engine (D17A), it would only cost me around 4 grands (cad)

but if i buy K20A, i'd probably end up spending over 10 grands (around 6 grands for 2nd hand JDM engine, and another 4-5 grands for the turbo)

***btw, what i really want to know is the difference for DOHC and SOHC***

not the difference between K and D series, thx

You're not going to make 325 with your stock motor. That's most likely simply what the kit is rated too (maybe if they're talking at the crank but that's still pushing it). DOHCs in the long run will still have more potential, not only because they generally displace more but also because of their optimized process in getting air in and out of the motor. How many 600whp+ D series street motors do you see around or even here on H-T? Not too many, again it all depends on what you wanna do but if I was in your shoes and I had the choice of a fully built high boost D series or a stock K20 with low boost, for a street car I'd take the K anyday (same with a built D or stock B18C in a '92-00 Civic). Just my $0.02 tho

Doesn't this kind of impy that you have the money, you're just not sure if you wanna spend it or not? If you're happy with 300-400whp then build/setup your D17 for high boost. If you wanna make 400whp+ then it would be in your best interest to start with a K.
