People with DX engine + EX tranny swap - HELP PLEASE
Hi!
I finally found some decent EX tranny for my 1996 D16Y7 coupe...
In the same time, I found DX tranny to replace my faulty one (bad differential)...
EX tranny S20 P20B00000 is $450
DX tranny S40 P20A00000 is $220
Both trannies are in mint condition and coe with 6 months written warranty... they are NOT rebuilt... they are taken from totalled cars (both from behind)...
So my question would be: is EX tranny worth that double price?
And what are your top speeds in every gear with DX engine with EX tranny compared to DX engine with original DX tranny??? Are there any changes.
Here are the top speeds for D16Y7 with DX tranny:
1. gear 30+ mph
2. gear 60 mph
3. gear 100 mph
4. gear 120+ mph
5. gear 120+ mph
Would my top speed drop when I swap it for EX tranny or will it stay the same?
If it will drop, what will my top speed be?
Please help cos I'm in the corner and many people tell me just to buy DX tranny and screw the EX... and you guys here which I trust and know you have the knowledge say that EX tranny is a MUST...
So help the guy with the bad tranny...
P.S.
That top speed fact is very important to me cos if I will ever want to sell the car, the first thing the buyer will ask is "WHAT IS THE TOP SPEED"...
Thank you thank you thank you!!!

I knew that... but what happens with top speeds in every gear?
Does cars top speed changes? So another words... would my car be slower with EX tranny?
Cos the guy that sells that to me said that I will have better acceleration but lower top speed...
Is that true???

I can give you my 2 cents but actually worh less than that, having a civic with your engine and tranny (y7-dx tranny) and compared to my 90 SI (a6-si tranny) the y7 lacks ***** big time, i've read the dx takes longer to wind through the gears(true) compared to the ex,IMO the gains you will get with the ex is not worth the extra money unless you get a beefier engine i.e mini-me, or y8 I would buy a used dx (chek the classifieds ) going for around $50 to $100 unless you plan to change the engine

i would say go the cheapest, if your not building a race car and your just using it for normal driving .. get the dx. or even a cx if your can find one.
I think I remember reading that the top speed you could ever acheieve with a y8 tranny was something like 148mph based on gearing.
Your Civic isn't safe, nor capable of speeds that fast. If the buyer asks, just tell them 150. Chances are if they're worried about it, they'll find a way to kill themselves with or without the "technical top speed."
And to give my input on wether it's worth it or not. Hell yes. Every single penny. A shorter tranny will be the number 1 thing you can do to make your car faster for the money. Just about the only other thing you can do to your car to make it that much quicker in a straight line is FI.

And YES, buyers here in Europe ask that immediately... cos for example in Germany, there is no speed limit on highway so you can drive very very fast... and the thing is MOST PEOPLE DO...
So the top speed is an issue here cos I don't want to loose potential buyer who worships top speed over acceleration...
Cos I know the exact sentence which I would hear from them constantly...
"What the f*ck is wrong with your car? I've seen 90HP Civic's run 120 mph and yours runs only 105 mph... there must be something wrong!!!"
And I don't want that... in that case I would rather stay with DX tranny cos I won't drive that car forever...

Thank you guys for inputs... it seems like EX tranny is REALLY a MUST...
I mean, after all... how much can I loose in top speed? 5 mph? 10?
Thanks again

Those prices are way to high, try to look around more. Local perfomance shops that do swaps should have a complete y8 or z6 swap laying around for about the price that those guys want for just a y8 tranny.
Oh ****: you are in Europe that might not work this way.

Yes that is the problem...
Here in Europe, parts are 2 times more expensive than in US...
Hell, even Honda MTF fluid costs $13/quart...
That's 4 times the price in US...

Get the gear ratios of each transaxle, that will help immensely on what they are capable of?
There are other variables, ECU, and engine come into play as-well. But as far as a better transaxle check the ratios, i'll see what I can find tonight. If i'm feeling helpful i'll do the math and post what I got.

i think the ex swap was one of the best mods to my y7, i have a 19t greddy turbo on my y7 and the tranny made the difference in the life of the engine, it feels like a completely different car with a y8 tranny so yes its worth it

Thanx man!!!
What are your top speeds in every gear? What can I expect?
And how much the rpm's drop when changing gears... more or less than with DX tranny?
Cos I see that as a major problem with DX tranny... if you rev it hard, when you shift, rpm's fall too low, so the engine is struggling to accelerate!
