Default Um just need a breif answer, what do I do with old coolant?

I think today I'm finally gonna get off my *** and flush the cooling system since some oil got in it when I changed the head gasket.

Anyway, I'm not one of the polluting type and doubt that it's ok to flush the coolant out onto the driveway, but is it ok to just throw in the trash or do I have to take it somewhere?

peace.

I THINK that any place like Auto Zone or Kragen would take it, but I'm not sure. You could call them and ask.

Yeah, there should be because you can't/aren't supposed to dump it.

None of the auto parts stores that I've ever been to take coolant. I've never thought about going to a shop, because I've had them give me crap sometimes about bringing oil. What I do is store it until my city has a hazardous household waste collection and bring it there.

Maybe it's like freon and you need to take it to a place to have it removed/dumped?

I always hold onto mine until "Free Hazardous Waste Removal Day".
Then I drop it off at one of the locations provided

I agree that in this case, the best solution is to check with your local municipality and see if there's a Hazardous Waste disposal place nearby.

I've also been known to drive over to a local garage with a box of donuts, and they're usually happy to accept oils, etc.

I don't recommend it (especially since you have oil mixed in), but I've been told you can flush antifreeze down a toilet. Since it's water soluble, and the sewage system is a closed system until it gets to the treatment plant, it's supposed to be okay. But like I say, I've never tried it, and I don't know that I'd endorse it.

The coolant will **** up the biological treatment process at some conventional plants. Municipalities have been known to track down individuals who contaminate their system like this.

If I could find it in me, I'd make my neighbors dog drink it the coolant.
(Noisy bastard barks all night).

But seriously, heres what I do:
Get a big oil/coolant bucket-pan kind of thing from Autozone/WalMart/wherever, and empty your fluids into it.

Replace the fliuds in your vehicle and put the used fluids in to the empty containers you just used.

Now you can drive that stuff to your nearest place that recycles the fluid while breaking in your freshly replaced fluids at the same time.

read right on the bottle. It says that the public sanitary waste system can handle it. Pour it down the toilet

Yeah, what do I know anyway. I'm only a certified operator working at a water district.

sorry it may say its OK but its still illegal via the EPA's gay regulations. CLEAN antifreeze isnt harmfull but used stuff is.

call your local branch of the EPA they will have a list of places that will take it for free.

Good to know. I'd read that before as well, and it's why I've always been leery of doing it. Dumping it down the toilet just seemed too easy and sketchy on the legal end. The peace of mind of spending $3 on a dozen donuts and leaving it with a shop is well worth it to me.

Anyone that's taken geology and learned about water tables will never dump it on the ground. Whether you give a rats *** about the environment or not, it's just stupid.

Actually, previous generations that dumped it on the ground unknowingly have contributed to the retardation that allows contemporary generations to dump it on the ground knowingly.

Good point, when the rest of you have children that you care about, perhaps my previous post will make sense after reading this thread.

Don't dump it, take the fluids to a place that can handle the disposal for you.
Break your new fluids in at the same time.. why is that so hard to do?

Dumping the fluids in the back yard is like finding a car in your front yard after trimming the lawn - Redneck.

Be responsible you heathens, will it kill you to do the right thing?

I'm a water resources engineer...

Please don't dump any or your fluids into the backyard, toilet, stormdrain or anywhere else that it can get in contact with ground or surface water. The gov't is spending millions of your hard earned tax dollers trying to clean up sites where our uninformed "older generations" have dumped toxic substances on the ground. There used to be a practice called deep well injection where they pumped the wastes deep into the ground. Not good.

Like others have said...It's not that hard to figure out the right thing to do!

I always take my used fluids to Pep Boys where they are happy to let you leave it.

They send it to a recycling center. The have to keep fairly strict records...at least in most states. I guess there are places where the shop still dumps it in a floor drain. IF anyone is still doing crap like that they are running a huge risk of being fined and/or shut down be the EPA, FEMA and sever other government regulatory agencies. It's just stupid to dump auto fluids into our water supply.

I mean really...
