Default Black caked on crap in exhaust ports

I am just cleaning the outside of my motor (b16) before I put it in my crx and I took the header off and noticed that the exhaust ports are full of black stuff. Is this normal? If I get the head portead and polished does it take care of this?

It's called CARBON and depending on how much is there and how many miles you've done, it's pretty normal.

You don't need to get a port & polish to get rid of it; you just need to clean it up yourself. Scrape of the chunky bits and hit the rest with some cleaning agent, petrol or carby cleaner and some elbow-grease should break it down.

Port & polish is a machine-shop job to improve the gasflow in your head (not your head, the cars head, right?).
