im looking at a 94 del sol right now. its a sohc motor. he says its a vtec but its auto. i hear that the vtec motors didnt come in auto. is this true or not?

 

The sohc motors did come in auto. The DOHC motors did not

 

i understand that. but my question is, are the sohc motors vtec though?

Yes, look at the block stamp. It should read D16Z6 if it's got VTEC. The block stamp is to the left of the heat shield on the header. It may be dirty just rub it with your thumb. Or you can buy my del sol. 97 si sohc vtec, 5 speed :-D

 

well, the guy wants to trade me for my car. i have a bagged 96 blazer. so not too many import guys want my car. so it was a rarity to find this guy wanting to trade me. so do you think that 94 is a decent car to fix up or am i wasting my time? i will post pics of it if someone shows me how to

 

D16Y8 also came in the sol too right? Isn't that vtec?

The D16y8 came in 96-97 del sols(like mine).

it all depends on how dedicated you are to it... del sols aren't too bad to work with, they're just a bit heavier than most civics though, but really, if you think it's worth it for you, then by all means.. no one on here can tell you if it will be worth YOUR time or not, that's up to you. Don't get the wrong impression. good luck and have fun if you do go with the sol.

well, ill be going pretty much all out on it. i want to do a swap of some sort. it will eventually be a full show car. they are heavier than civics? i thought they'd be lighter

 

Nope, they're heavier due to the support structures needed for the car.

They're roughly 50 lbs heavier than a 92-95 Civic Si.

DX hatchback: 2178lbs.
Si hatchback: 2326lbs

DX 4-door: 2275lbs.
LX 4-door: 2319lbs.


I've gotten my vtec sol down to about 1900 w/ me in it. but even when I was stock I had no problem beating up on civic si's. It probably had allot more to do w/ obd1 vs obd2.

I'm talking SOhc vtec vs SOHC vtec there's not a big difference. Of course the Del Sol VTEC will weigh more it's got the b series motor.

You should get a 95 del sol. The 93-94 are notorious for targa leaks, but the design changed in 95 on the seals. The 95 is also still 0bd1 so if you ever want to go FI you can easily do it without switching ecus. Furthermore, the 95 Si's would have the d16z6 which is better than the d16y8 in the 96-97s because of a variety of reasons, mainly the y8s have a tendency to spin bearings due to the lack of output but the y8 oil pump (33% less than the z6 pump). Also, the 95 was the last year for the aux ("fog") lights. I wish I had known this stuff before I bought my first sol...live and learn I guess.....

BTW, all del sol vtecs (dohc) (USDM) came in red or black except the 95s (another reason why 95 is the best year). That year they were avaliable in two shades of green (ie rare!).

Aux lights..uhhhhh, dont like em, thats my opinion....I have a 96 turbo sol (obd1)...the only thing I did was run a conversion harness ($90) and a chipped p06 (Wired for vtec) ecu and im now OBD1 so its not all that hard...especially if you find a 96-97 with less miles and in better condish.
