This guy paid a shop to paint the tails for his xB. My brother has been taking auto body and paint in school. Painted his car (first ever) 3 weeks ago flawlessly. He's volunteered to paint my xB tails red and put a nice clear coat on afterwards. How is this done professionally? What about wet sanding? Basically looking for the steps to get nice and bright red tails minus the reverse light.
I know about the transparent candy apple red paint for model cars by Testors. Used it along with the Testors clear coat and had really dull red tail lights. The tails in the pic were done buy a paint shop. Any ideas how to get painted tails to come out this clear / shiny?

Thanks for any tips on this

Yeah you gotta use candy apple red color from House of Kolor. Thing is, the transparent red you see there isnt a final coat. Its what gives the depth of a candy paint job. What this guy did is used it alone over the plastic and then clear coated over it. More than likely color sanded and polished as well.
Mike.

Can this be purchased from an automotive paint shop? If not, where can I get this?

Yeah, my bro said he has this top quality clear coat he'll be putting on the tails once painted.

What grit would he use to sand? Wet sand right?
Just need some details from you techs who know how to pull this off.
BTW > I hate the rice lights that come on the xB
...Bought OEM lights from another guy on the web for $45 just in case mine get f**ked up
Keep the info coming

Pics look great, but he mentions nothing about a clearcoat
I know pics can be deceiving. Do you think the CRX lights are as nice as the xB's up top with just using the Krylon spray paint?
Still looking for wet sanding instructions if anyone knows.......

My friend did this about a year ago when he first bought his scion. He used regular transparent red from any hobby store and then my friend at his body shop cleared them and then they wet sanded and buffed them to a mirror finish

the best thing i could say is to clean off the lights really well with some acetone or alcholol and get a nice and wet coat for the testors candy apple and then let it dry, spray some "bull dog adheasion promotor" before the clear and yeah i would use a better clear coat
the stain glass paint looks good even with out a clear coat but, it tends to be on the dark side if you use to much and fades easy::

1. Yes, ask for Candy Apple Red. Its a red tint. When you open the can you should be able to see the bottom of the can through the very deep color. I would get the "House of Kolor" brand.
2. Have your bro use that top quality clear. House of Kolor recommends you use their clear because it has the highest UV protection but since these are just lights Im sure you can get away with other clears.
3. I color sand (wet sand) with 2000 grit sand paper. Then use compound to polish it up. 3M makes really good polishing compounds.
Another set of lights wont hurt. Plus if you pull this off well enough maybe you can make another set and sell them for more than you paid for them.
Mike!

Those came out great. I think that Scion should just go ahead and declare the factory tail lights a factory defect and issue everybody lights like that.

Anyway boys and girls do it the krylon way!
Rice to nice.

BTW don't do it like the picture I posted, put the lens in the oven and paint the inside not the outside. If you do paint outside clearcoat it and wax it now and then.
