I"ve done the basics... full catback, intake, and header... but im interested in gaining some more hp. A lot of my friends say screw my D-series engine, and get a new one and alot say turbo my D and what not. I'm still kinda learning about engines so I prolly wouldn't even know where to start with those. What is something else that I can do bolt on to gain some more power? I know new cam gears or plulleys would help, but what else can give some hp gains? I am open to any suggestions... or if there are any threads that answer my question, let me know. I've tried doing some searches... but haven't found really what I need. Just a lot of technical stuff I dont understand yet haha.

There isn't much more you can do to make it more powerful. Anything else won't be cheap. You can run nitrous. Maybe run some iridium plugs.

 

no, camgears and pulleys WONT help.
iridium plugs my ***.

a hiflo cat would be a good adition.
if you can deal with the labor of the install,
a lightweight flywheel would also be good.

lose your powersteering and other belt driven power accessories.

from there on if you want real gains without forced induction or swap, you'll need $$,

a cam, a milled head(higher compression) afc or fpr, and some dyno tuning.

I could see you gain another 20whp

 

 

hmm... well a turbo kit would run me like 3000 or so right? That would mean washing a loooootttt of dishes... haha but do u think it would even be wise to get one since I'm a noob? I do have a lot of friends who know about engines so maybe they could help me, but like would it be easy to learn basic maintenance? If so then maybe that would be an option I can save up for... besides the sound of BOV's kinda give me a woody... hahaha (but then again that one was on a WRX )

 

i've built turbo kit for a dseries from dsm parts for under 600 bucks.

probably the best bang for buck.

I went ahead and built the head, way before header/exhaust, only because I didnt want to spend 300-700 bucks on 2-4 whp. Hell, i still dont have header/exhaust.

So i bought valve train (300), and cam (300) =D

But then for that price, save up a little more and get a turbo kit and tune it to death.

 

im building a d-series turbo, its gonna run me under 1000. most of the parts being brand new. check out the classifieds:FI section, there are some REALLY good deals, just be patient and jump on deals.

 

just a quick jump in to say intake manifold another cheap way to gain a few HP

 

for a newb i would suggest getting a greddy kit or an apexi kit. both can be had for around $1300 or less. i would stay away from people's junkyard kits, as most of the time they peice some parts together and then dont know what to do, so they sell it. then if some of the parts were junk it isnt their problem anymore. so i would seriously suggest saving up the extra couple hundred dollars and investing in a greddy or apexi kit. you will be happy in the end and you will get more bang for your buck that doing NA mods. i would definetly suggest doing this over any other mod to your motor.

 

turbo the d16...my buddy had one w/ the greddy kit and he loved it

you could get a crower stage 2 cam and get tuned good

 

Here's your choices as I see it.

Staying NA

Cam $300-$400
VAFC-II for tuning (least expensive option) $300
Intake manifold $300
Dyno time $100-$200

So, thats $1000 or more for 20 HP Maximum.

Or you can add $300 with that and get 40HP+ with a turbo kit.

Boosted d series , its the best bang for the buck..

Take the time to research FI before you do anything, start doing some searchs across Honda-tech, turbod16, and homemadeturbo. Learn how FI works, fuel management works, and the huge list of options available for boost such as home made or kits and compare your knowledge, bank account, and reasonable options together.

 

turbos the way to go. it would be useless to get all the bolt ons. if you can install an intake, header, and exhaust, you can install a turbo kit. its pretty much a bolt on. tuning will be the key to making your stock motor last. i got 210whp on stock my d16z6 block.

 

save up for a turbo setup. While you are saving take a lot of time to research everything that it takes to get your car running properly with the turbo setup. Trust me you will be much happier. I wish i hadn't wasted all my money on boltons for my d series before getting my turbo stuff.

I am all motor with my z6 and i am pretty happy with it. I am in the low 15's and most of the people in the SOHC 1/4 times thread are around the same times as me with turbo kits. I am going to go turbo one of theses years.

I disagree. I have owned both. I know this statement was meant to emphasise your point, but I just don't find it to be true. I was more than happy with my D16Z6 in my hatch. Threw in a cam, mild headwork, Y8 tranny, no cat, cam gear...It hussled for a little **** of an engine...

It in no way shape or form compares to my turbo'd Y8 of old, but the modded Z6 was also thousands less.

My kit was $1200 pieced together, and I guarantee if you took a stock Y8 and put $1200 worth of NA mods into it, it would not be as fast as it would with a $1200 turbo kit.
