It's basically the same motor, except you will have to deal with OBD2 going to OBD1. I think the block is pretty much the same, the difference is in the head and the intake manifold.

Besides being OBD1 and OBD2 yes, it is a direct drop it. It will work with your current transmission as well.

I swear doing that swap is illegal, besides... WHY?

The y8 already makes 2 hp/1 ft lb over the z6.

I think the z6 runs a bit lower compression than the y8. More ideal for turbocharging.

Yeah, that .4:1 really makes all the difference in the world....

Better than nothing. Plus z6's are more common and less expensive.

He should already have the y8... unless he blew it up.

However, I'm still fairly sure an obd2 --> obd1 swap is illegal.

It is illegal. Putting a older motor into a newer chasis is illegal.

yeah it is, but to my understanding only in california?

but anyway, if it did blow up or something, source out a y8 for the mere fact that its younger. go to a wrecking yard, find an ex, and you're good. money spent now will be better in the long run.

and if you think you'll be saving money with the z6, the few hundred thats cheaper will have to be used to pay for the obdII>obdI conversion.

good luck!

i wanted to build on a block before i dropped it in and i dont have constant flow of cash so it would be build here and there so ill probably buy a new d16y8 and build it up and everything and drop it in a year or so

Then buy a turbo kit, or a Corvette.

It is illegal in California for sure, and maybe in some other states. It just depends on that state's emissions laws.

In Connecticut changing a motor from OBD2 -> OBD1 will automatically cause it to fail emissions. I am not sure as to the legality of swapping an older motor into a newer chasis though. I have a feeling that it is illegal.

Not trying to rain on your parade or anything but those are pretty much the exact same motors. Except for the fact that the z6 head flows better.

the best way to drop a z6 into a newer civic EX.
i woudl use the LONGBLOCK ONLY!
i would swap teh y8 manifold, sensors and injectors over, the distributor, and the thermostat housing and water tube. then you would need to swap over the cast metal mount that is bolted to teh block behind the timing cover from the obd2 engine to the obd1 engine.

doing all that will keep it obd2, make it run and keep it easy. i just did several of those swaps in teh past month.
