OK guys, i've been searching around, for an answer for my problem. If its not obvious, im gettin shitty gas mileage in my Del sol s. Here is what i've come up with so far that i can do to potentially increase my mileage other than driving like a 70 year old woman...

Change Air Filter (been meaning to do this, but it dont look so dirty...)
Change Gas Filter (dunno about this one, think its been on since the car was made )
Change Oil Filter (did this with swap in August)
New O2 sensor (pricey eh?)


ok, now my ? is how effective are each of these individually, and if there are any more please put ur $.02 worth in

 

what kind of gas mileage are u getting? im getting sorta good gas mileage(20-28mpg) out of my d15 but i think it should be better. idk if checking timing will help?

 

i use to get 45 mpg out of my d15b7. after swap to d15b vtec, i get 42 mpg. when I first got the car (d15b7) i was only getting 33 mpg. did an oil change and a bottle of lucas injector cleaner, mpg average out to be 45 mpg.

 

My d15b7 is getting around high 30's in town and on the freeway I average about 42 mpg.

Some things that could increase your gas mileage are:

Cap and Rotor

Spark Plugs and Wires

Like you mentioned a new fuel filter, most manufacturer's recommend them being
changed around every 60,000 miles.

Air Filter

You can try and Oil additive, some customer's that have came in have told me that when they use lucas oil additives they have noticed a nice increase in mileage.

Then I would also say some sort of fuel injector cleaner.

Off the top of my head that is all I could really think of right now, a lot of those things do add up in cost, but can be very affective. Keeping up with basic maintenance will play a big role in gas mileage.

hmm, i'd think about the fuel filter.

also running all ur power accessories all the time will take away from
the 35mpg your supposed to get

you never said how much mileage your actually getting also.

 

i dont run my power accessories all the time. I never have headlights on unless its night and i cant see, my CD player is on most of the time, but not all(mostly just radio which uses less power), and only during the summer, and right when i start in the morning is my AC/Heater on. Also, im getting about 20 mpg, which sucks b/c $5 (which is only about 2.5 gallons) only gets me about 50 miles, and i drive more than that in a day and i dont have that much every day for gas

Bottom line, drive like a bitch once you get it tuned up.

I have a choice in my Cobra, drive normal and get 20mpg or drive fun and get 15.

It's much more entertaining to feel the power every now and then, instead of all the time. You adjust to it if it's all the time.

 

fuel filter and ignition parts are a great place to start

also make sure your valve lash clearences are in spec (valve adjustment)

and keep those tires about 5psi over-inflated

over inflated!!! i dont think i wanna do that, they are cracking as it is and they are damn near bald. im already in need of new tires, i dont want to push the limits on it

what would valve adjustment entail? would it involve taking apart the head? is there a faq somewhere that will walk me through it? post link if so thanx

 

hey guys, i got my idle down, and sprayed some choke cleaner into the IAVC and the TB, so im hoping that the mileage goes up, next week im going to buy a new air filter and feul filter, and maybe some oil treatment....hope all goes good

i adjusted my valves about 3 weeks ago and no more ticking noise and i gained alil more mileage. i also used that seafoam stuff.

 

Pretty n00b questions - but how would I know if I have timing issues? And can I tell is the distributor and caps are bad just by looking? I'm getting to the end of my rope here...

I used to get 40mpg consistently out of my D15B7 (5spd man)... but then the head cracked at 185k, and I regrettably decided to go with a JDM D15B7 in hopes of a lower-mileage engine lasting me until Armageddon (had fallen in love with the car by this point). Sadly, I haven't seen above 30mpg since.

When I had the swap done, I got new spark plugs and wires, air filter, timing belt, clutch... the old fuel-injection system got swapped onto the new engine, since the JDM was carburated vs my fuel injected... The transmission is a little rough, but it was before the swap, so it can't be that - and it's running the same ECU........ I'm assuming the same O2 sensors (??)...

Guess I will follow the suggestions here - fuel filter and fuel additives to clean the injectors......... anything else someone in my position should be looking at?

 

Anything seem to have helped, Apoc? I'm curious for the results on this...

 

i got my 92 civ 3 months ago, the car came with an air intake and a cat back exhaust was getting around 32mpg driving it having some fun.. after driving it normaly i got 38mpg, i then put a header and i got 42mpg, people i ask say that increasing air flow letting the motor breathe better and pushing gases out can help mileage..but getting a bigger throttle body and intake manifold would decrease it. assumming driving normaly accelerating slowly and shifting at 2grand, would a bigger bbk throttle body increase mileage, aswell as either a d16z6, d16y8, or an edlebrock performer x intake manifold increase or decrease mileage? im running 92octane with lucas oil injector cleaner with upper cylinder head lubricant and octane booster, redline synthetic oil in motor, and redline synthetic manual transmission fluid.

 

also a throttle body spacer, claims to improve mileage and power

 

 

also snow performance water/meth injection kit? claims to improve a few mpg's
