Oil consumption after track day
Guys with track experience please help, my oil level was at the max mark on the dipstick before the track day, but after about 180 miles on the track, my oil now is at the min mark on the dip stick. That means my engine consume at 1qt? Is it normal? BTW, I am using Mobil 1 10W-30. I am pretty sure that my engine do not consume oil in daily driving. Anyone has the same experience?

Adam (RS) uses at least that much in a day with his R. My car doesn't use any noticable amount, but I'm running cheaper dino oil (castrol gt-x), not more expensive synth oil
..goes through your PCV, hook up a catch can and you'll be surprised how much you'll recover, not that you'd want to reuse it, but it will give you a clear indication of how much oil your "consuming". And no, the fact that your runing synthetic oil does not pre-dispose your engine to consume more oil, R engines just use oil, and they do so especially when tracked!

That kind of oil usage is normal for the B series motors. If you track your car, make sure it is full of oil. Take some extra with you and keep an eye on the oil level.
I will refill mine at least once or twice durring a 2 day track weekend.

Does Syn oil cause the oil consumption?
I'm going to get shot at, I know.
However, I do not use oil when I'm at the track, and I use normal, cheap oil.
All the synthetic-using ITR with which I'm familiar do use oil at the track.
Sorry, but that's my personal experience.
Mind you, I'm still thinking of switching to synthetic, since some recent dyno results seem to indicate that you can pick up a couple of horses just by switching to synthetic.

Castrol GT-X
Yeah, I burn oil too!
But is it necessarily a "bad thing", ... as long as you replenish it ...?
BTW -- it does in some way emperically show that there MUST be a difference between "regular" and the "synthetic"!!

Project X,
Speaking of thick oil, should old engine use thicker oil like 10W-40?

It should use some oil DURING the track days and not after the track days.
At Sebring a couple of weeks ago I used about 2 qts of Castrol GTX in about 260 miles. When I use Mobil 1 I usually use about 1 qt on the track. Then again I shift at the redline every single time and rarely let the rpms drop below 7 grand. I usually do 3, 30-40 minute sessions in the morning and the same in the afternoon. The Mobil 1 seems to hold up much better and is not as "dirty" at the end of the day. (the damn dealer changed my oil during an inspection so I ran with the cheap stuff). Sebring is a fast track and when I drive on other track I go through a lot less oil.
