how can i tell when my tranny is bad?
i have a 95 accord ,5 spd, with 234k miles. lately whenever i come off the clutch i am hearing a "clunk" sound. if i am driving and i keep the clutch down and shift form second to third i hear the same sound, even when the clutch is still down. i know it's not the sound of my clutch engaging my fly wheel. i know it's not the engine,'cause i never hear it while idiling and reving.... think it's the tranny?
if is it the tranny do i need to do a rebuild?
is there a kit for rebuilding and how much would it cost?
thank in advance guys

I have no idea if it is transmission but maybe you can take it to a repair shop and ask them where they think the noise came from and what needs to be done - take it to two or three shops to be on safe side.
If it is transmission, you could take it out and take it to a transmission shop that you can trust somewhat and have them rebuild it. it should cost about $250 to $275 for labor plus parts. (You could buy parts by yourself if you feel better.) then you can put it back with new clutch/throw bearing and resurfaced or new flywheel.
Or you could go to pull it yourself junk yard and find a car with low miles and pull a transmission - it costs about $75 at my local pull yourself junkyard. I have had good luck twice with the transmissions at that junk yard. if doing this way, pull the 5th gear cover and take a look at it. if the gears look good, the tranny should be O.K. (Look for clean and somewhat well-taken care of cars.)
With the mileage on your car, I would guess you would have about 75k more miles to go, maybe a $75 transmission would work best for you, but take it to a few shops and ask what they think about the noise before you do anything, if you can not be so sure that it is the transmission?

Does this happen when you engage the clutch?
or only when you are shifting?
if not sure then do a test, try it with no shift just engage the clutch and wait, then release clutch try again with clutch then shift.
Post outcome
can tell you better from there

it happens when i engage the clutch in 1st 2nd and 3rd. i tried the shitfting and waiting ...same thing is both instances..i can hear it..it's not a loud noise...no one hears it unless i tell them to listen for it....if my gears are worn is this what i am suppposed to expect?
No I would check all your mounts first.
Seems like you might have a bad motor mount. Not uncommon for FWD Honda's. They go threw front motor mounts like mad. That is why if you end up replacing it, also get the Energy Suspension Motor mount incerts. They will save the mount from ripping. They are a poor design, but fixable.
Good luck
