I have wrong ECU. Should I care much?
Hi,
I already got help on "locating" EGR valve in my '93 Civic EX.
Periodically my 'Check Engine' light goes on (when I drive faster the 45mph, and motor is already warm). And it stays on till I kill the engine. After I start again, light statys off till I reach 45-50mph. And it goes over and over.
I've read the DTC code. It's 12 - EGR valve problem.
Interesting thing is: my engine (D16Z6) does not have EGR at all.
So, previous owner installed wrong ECU. Currently, it's P07 (probably for VX). And it flags an error when it can not find EGR.
Could it cause any problems? or bad gas-milage?
I don't plan to do any racing in the near future
I, simly can not do it! 
I drive manual transmission car for 5 days only (I started from AT, and I drove for about 10 years).
So, I don't need to do any perfomance tweaks, like chiping ECU, etc.
But I want to know what could go bad if one uses "wrong" ECU.
Please, please, tell me that everything's OK

I know, that P28 is a proper ECU for my car.
But I do not want to start investing in this car (I just bought it, and I did not plan to spend more that I already did).
And previous owner had smog check passed last august (I do not know how he did it with wrong ECU though).
So, I'm good till August 2006 in this department.
The question is: how bad is "wrong ECU"? I could ask Honda dealership. But I bet $100 that answer would be "you deffinetly need to buy a new ECU; you could buy it from us".

Yes, Civics in California do use an EGR. They are the VX and CX models.
It's looking for an EGR valve because he is using a P07 (VX) ECU.
Everything is not OK. You need a P28. NOW.
The P07 VTEC crossover is way too low, it is tuned for VTEC-E performance, it needs a 5 wire wideband o2 sensor to operate properly. The P07 is looking for sensors you don't have, and if it is switching VTEC at all, it is at way too low of an RPM.

what i meant was D16z6's don't use a egr. I totally did not read the part of the P07 ecu though. yes you now need a P28. sorry for not reading it through

I fixed it :)
It was easier as I thought.
My P07 ECU has the same PCB as P28 ECU. There are two different PCBs for P07, I was lucky to have the one which is "correct".
So I just chipped it (I had all components; being an electronic engineer brings some bonuses: access to components and EPROM programmer).
I programmed the ROM with stock P28 program, and soldered it to my P07 box.
Took me about 30 minutes to do all this stuff.
Works great now. No Check Enging LIM anymore !!!
