Default For those that track their cars...

After doing two track events, I started to worry about oil starvation - esp in high speed sweepers.

I will get a baffled pan in a month or two, but there's another two day track day coming up in 3 weeks and wondered if oil starvation is enough of a concern that maybe I shouldn't go? Or will topping off the oil level to just above the top dot on the dip stick be okay for now?

yoshi - whose getting worried

As long as you keep an eye on your oil level then you should
be fine. Dont you have an oil pressure gauge yet?!?!?!?

I've never had a single problem with oil pressure, both before and after the oil cooler setup. I have the oil pressure guage to verify this.

I think you'll be fine, but a baffled pan sure wouldn't hurt . . .

Some people put in extra 1/2 quart of oil into the engine to fight those pesky G's.

Yes, after the even you should drain it, and yes, its a total pain to drain 1/2 of oil, might as well change the whole thing.

Did you ever notice any pinning or knocking though?

The extra oil is a common BMW thing to do, I've never meet anyone who did it on a honda.

Oil pressure gauge (my teg had one), oil temp, baffled pan, oil cooler, dual filters.... sounds like a project in the making?
and you MOST DEFINETLY need all that in order to stay competetive too j/k

I tracked my car for the first time recently, and I was blowing smoke, I think it was because of oil surging because I was smoking on the same corner each time, holding 2nd gear to 8000 rpm. I tried shifting into 3rd earlier on the same corner and no more smoke. My oil level was up to the second notch, and still there was some surging, so I think an oil pan is definitely a worthwhile upgrade if you track your car a lot. Any difference between the Spoon and Mugen oil pans?

The Spoon one is a OEM one with baffles welded in and a sticker on the outside.

i have major oil consumption issues with my R, but its quite normal... ive learned to live with it. Just keep an eye out on that dipstick and it should be fine.

You and 'Chucky' both seem to use more oil than me....yet I'm the one with way more kms on the clock!! It does NOT help, that Chucky had his ITR 'bouncing' off the rev-limiter....within a few kms of the Honda dealership - when the car was brand new.

Can't say I've had any major problems on the trackl....like 'N1 Spec' said, just keep an eye on your oil level and top up if required.

Both Spoon and Mugen are just Stock Pans with baffles welded in, Although Mugen paints the baffles to match the pan and Spoon doesnt, Also you will have a few fitment problems with the Mugen pan when using Spoon Drain plugs, That can be solved by bending a part of the baffle.

Give me a call Yoshi, I'll see what I can do. Also I can get you some pricing on Omori Gauges

Is there anyone else who makes baffled pans other than Spoon or Mugen? I am looking for a cheaper option than those. I had oil starvation problems 2 weeks ago at Sebring and VTEC cut out a few times. I am in the process of getting an oil cooler, is there anything else that will help out other than running oil a little high? I want to attend a track day soon but probably won't be able to come up w/ money for baffled pan and entry fee so it's gotta be one or the other.

Yoshi

you should worry if you are running on short tight tracks or repeated testing on a skidpad. overfill your oil (0.25l) for now and keep an eye on the oil level.

save your money on the name brand oil pans and have someone weld in a set of baffles into your oem pan. that's all spoon and mugen do anyways for $250+.

better safe than spinning a rod bearing ...
