Blew motor, possible reasons?
To make a long story short, the bottom end had 30k on it (GS-R) and the head has about 95k on it (GS-R that came in the car). I let my buddy drive the car, (he's a mechanic, and put the motor in for me, he bought the car w/ a blown bottom end & replaced it, then sold it to me) to see a weird grinding type noise it was making when I halfway let off the clutch. Anyway, he gets about 50 yards from his house and throws a rod through the block. The motor ran fine for about 350 miles before all this happened. What could have caused this? I'm not really worried about getting it fixed, I understand this sort of thing happens, but I'm curious to know what could have caused it.
The mods to the motor were as follows:
Skunk2 IM, cheapo intake, fidanza flywheel, 3 puck exedy clutch.

Could you guys elaborate on what you mean by bad assembly? I watched him do most of the work, he's done a million swaps and engine assemblys before. I highly doubt he messed up. He's the type to do things 100% right or not at all. Plus I happen to be one of his closer friends, I doubt he'd do me like that.
Plus what would assembly have to do with a rod going through the block? The block we purchased was already assembled.
Any other possible reasons?

def a possibility, or maybe it wasnt in the best shape when chris got it. alot of factors play into this jar. the block had been sitting around, and was gunked up. coulda just been not the best bottom to start with (you would have never known unless u really cracked into the block). im thinking it has to either be the qoute above, bad bearings, or the engine wasnt right to begin with and the guy took u, im sorry bout it bro. itll be back running in no time.

same thing happened to my d16z6 motor. right before it went out it had this grinding noise coming from the clutch and it felt like something snapped in there. turns out the motor completely siezed up instead. i haven't opened it up to see what it is but i assume it's probably the pistons of bearings because it's tightly on there. couldn't turn it over with a breaker bar on the pulley bolt - in fact that bolt rather loosened instead. i just did an oil change a week earlier so i wonder if i did something wrong but that is very unlikely. i drained the oil recently and it looked fine. any idea what might of happend and why i felt a grinding noise right before it blew???
