Default CRX bolt on exhaust question

i tried searching...but couldn't find anything or just didnt search hard enough like you Honda-tech Pro's

anywho....im looking for a bolt on catback exhaust for a friend of mine. Needs to be over 2.5" and under 3.0" for a 91 CRX.....

any suggestions? most of the stuff i found (RS*R & Skunk2) are either 2.25" or 2.5"

I suggest you get a custom exhaust from a muffler shop.

Have them custom make it with some flanges, and then you bolt it on then.

Brand name dont mean nuthin just a higher price tag. The muffler shop are usually pretty good about that kinda stuff.

ok....not to be mean or anything but you need to learn the concept of an exhaust system. Yes bigger is better to an extent. But the only time you'll ever see real numbers on a dyno off just adding an exhaust is with a turbo.

I'm sure you have heard an engine discribed as a huge water pump before, being as that the faster you can move the air through it the smoother it runs. Well if you are only taking in so much air (CAI or ram air i hope) it won't do much good to run that big of an exhaust. In fact i have heard on a few occasions where people lost power by going too big on the exhaust. Also keep in mind that the professional "name brand" exhausts are usually like 2.25"....do you know why?

I do, in theory but i don't think your mind could comprehend it.

With that said i'll stop, and hope you don't rip yourself off, but instead learn from this site and others and go the more cost efficent route.

Basically you need enough back pressure and enough air rushing through at the same time. "K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid." Is what i was told when it came to my car. But if you are feeling frisky and you engine needs that kinda AIR movement, stay between the 2.5-3" bracket Any bigger you might as well just bolt the flange up to the header and be done with it. It'll save you about 300$ and about 30lbs of bent piping under your ride.

if you want some high quality work done for a good price down in So Cal....
go to...
Jesse's Muffler and Brakes
(619) 462-2029

Those guys did my exhaust and it's fucken beautiful. Full custom setup, they do anything you want, *as big as you want.* The welds are clean and give you brand new hangers. Anything from Hi-flow cats to resonators to complete set-ups. Tell him the sound and the price you want and he'll make it work. If he can fit it under your car he can make it part of your ride. Ok that's all for my Plugs...

Don't over do it.

crush bent piping is like clogged arteries....when blood flows past a restriction in the arterie,it tends to slow down and spin a 360 before moving on.Same with exhaust, except no blood and no arterie.Plus,if you want something that truly sounds good, you usually don't want custom exhaust, cause depending on how many bends, muffler restriction, motor compression....whether its sohc or dohc...your exhaust has a really good chance of sounding like ****,even if you have him weld in a resonator. So do yourself a favor, unless your turbo'd,go ahead and spend 400 bucks on a nice exhaust system like a'pexi WS 2 or RS*R exmag.Looks good, quiet, and has less restriction......

ok now I didnt read any of the post but here the best thing IMO.

RS*R is a nice *** exhaust I have one so I am not knocking it. If you are looking to make power you do not want the RS*R it is stingey( cant spell ) when it comes to top end power.

2 1/4 or 2.25" exhaust is all you need anything bigger and your going to lose back pressure and that means less scavenging( I really cant spell ) which means less power.

You can either go to muffler that does crush bent and get 2.50" exhaust pipe that way it flows arounds the bends like 2.25 and has enough backpressure to make your motor happy or you can get any exhaust such as THERMAL GREDDY APEXI MAGNAFLOW bassically any company that makes exhasut systems makes them for the CRX.

And one a side YOU CANT HONESTLY SAY YOU SEARCHED AND FOUND NOTHING FOR THIS SUBJECT

ok i thought about it ALOT today on how to explain why you don't want bigger....

think of sound waves bouncing through the pipe. Now on a smaller diameter pipe it will be shorter traveling and move pretty slow because of the movement back and forth and thats where most of the energy in the wave is wasted moving up and down though the pipe not moving out.

Now the bigger you go the farther the waves travel and the faster they can escape out the tube.

BUT also keepin mind that going too big on a tube will waste too much energy on up and down and actually cause reverse waves counteracting the ones trying to excape causing the exhaust to actually cause a vacuum back into the combustion chamber. Thus becoming bad.

In simple terms...2.75 is the biggest you want for anything honda related. Even if it is a full blown race turbo set up
