Default żD-series alternator on B-series?

Search provided a majority of, "No, you can't," along with the occasional, "I did it with some minor mods."

My Q is: First, is this a reasonable/reliable thing to do? Can it be done by your average wrench chimp, or is this done by custom fab experts? What is the difference, exactly, that keeps this from being a feasible option?

As to the why, i have an identical parts car, but it has the d-series w/a new alternator (less than 1-2 months old) and i hate to go **** money i don't have down the hole on a b-series alt. if i can make it happen with the D...

Thanx for your time!

I have a B16 on a stand and a couple
of D series alternators laying around..So I gave it a feasability study..
First,I removed the B16 alt pulley and put in on the d-series alt..
That works fine..the only problem would be the tension bolt
and a slight difference in spacing..

I can design a piece that would adapt the two
to be compatable but it will be after while..
I am still at work..

rough draft:

It would look something like that..
The left hand hole you would use a nut and a bolt..
The right hand hole you would have to tap and thread a bolt into it
and bolt it to the top mount on the alternator..

88dxcrx,
haha, that just reminded me of the MS PAINT thing.

Interesting, my alt. is doin just fine at the moment, but it'll go sooner than later, is a b series one more money or something?

Paint Shop Pro Yo!

This is possible I'm sure..You will just have to fab up
a method of securing the top mount..
Be that in making some sort of adapter
or you could re-design the upper mounting bracket

The top mount on the D-series alternator case
is just slightly taller than the B-series so the two do not line up..

All this makes me wonder if the internals of the two alternators could be interchangable..

why dont you just bolt on the dseries mounting bracket,
it attachesto that bolt over to the left, on the side of the block,
instead of the back of theblock like the dseries one.
