Default keeps running after i turn off engine

yo i have a 1987 accord and when i turn the key the engine still runs for few seconds and the car shakes and sounds horrible than it stops enybody have clue what that coud be?? thanx

sounds like the engine diesels after you shut it off... there are 3 things that i can think of that could cause that.

1) as mentioned, ignition timing is off,

2) idle speed is too high,

3) extremely high engine temps when you shut it off.

Many cars of that vintage have an idle cut-off solenoid that allows the throttle plate to completely close when ignition is OFF and kill the engine. When ignition is ON the solenoid is actuated to hold the throttle plate at idle position. The stop point is adjustable and may have been advanced too far, allowing enough air to bypass at OFF to cause the run-on dieseling. Throttle plate should be completely closed at idle.

As mentioned by others, timing and engine temperature can also cause dieseling.
