Default Please Help Diagnose First Gear Problem...

tranny: ls manual

i've had this problem since i had my car. this problem isn't crippling or anything, but it's really starting to get to me. if it was anything easy, i wouldve solved it long ago. so this is where i need your help telling my where my problem lies. please only pretty sure answers!

Problem: the problem lies in first gear. when i engage in first gear sometimes and start to release the clutch to accel (normal driving), the RPM goes up as normal, but my car isn't moving in sync with that particular RPM while accelering. it moves, but wayy slower. ex: when i accel from 2 to 3 thousand rpm it'll feel like im moving 1 to 2 thousand rpm. sometimes i can solve this problem by giving it more glass before i let off the clutch, but not always.

im so puzzled, i dont even know if it's the tranny or clutch. i think it has to do with clutch because it feels like it's not "grabbing" correctly. but then im pretty sure it's the tranny because it's basically only in first gear. so what is the exact problem?

thanks,

i think your timing is off, you need to get it checked and adjusted...mine was off and i didn't know til i got my car smogged, car acceleration improved a lot after it was corrected, if this isnt the problem then i dunno, just tryin to help.

Pretty sure....... it sounds like your clutch is slipping> With the symptoms that you are having. If the car is in 1st gear then the tranny should be all good(if it wasnt going into gear that would be a whole other problem, syncros) . More often than not when your car isnt responding to the rpms that your are giving it the clutch is slipping. But that is just from my experence. As far as it not slipping in any other gear may just be more subtle because of the torque band being lower. Im in now way insinuating that your stupid and not noticing im just tryin to help

good info, fwdrifter you make sense, but i have a different viewpoint on the clutch "slipping." my interpretation is when the plates are so worn down that it doesnt grab and pull until the point where you let off the clutch completely... my stock cluth engages fine just like a stock clutch should be, but it in first gear it just feels like it's pulling a lot lower than what the RPM meter is showing...

Theres no damn tellin man . i could see where Brucie would think that it would be a timing problem but the clutch thing sounded good to i mean when was the last time you had a tune up or checked the rotor cap sparkplug wires distributor. When you give the car more gas you say that it picks up as it should unlike when a clutch slips the rpms go high then usually drop off to the right rpm. Have you done any work to the car where you may of had to move the dist. if so i would see where it could be your timing shifted. other than that it would be a lot easer to say if i could hear it . ill keep thinkin .......

This might sound stupid, but if you have the clutch out, check to see that there isnt any fluid on it.. that would cause it to slip as if it were worn.. if not, the i would check the timming.. good call on that.
