help out a newb! please.
okay, here's the scenerio. my little brother is 14, he's really interesting in autocrossing. he's been out to a few that i've entered with my mr2 and he really really likes it! i've taught him to drive my car and i think he is going to be an excellent driver eventually. my friend just went into the air force and left behind his next project car. an ef hatch which we pulled the d16 out of and he ordered a zc but we never put it in. i'm thinking about throwing that zc in it, getting some coilovers and good tires and letting him use it as a track car for now. i've been researching the swap for about a week now but since i don't know much about hondas i'm getting some mixed info and not finding out everything i need. there's plenty of info on swapping it into a crx but i haven't found much of the specifics for the civic swap. any links or general info would be great but here are a few questions i have that i haven't found the answers to.
right now the hatch has a 4 speed stick, what trannies are available that will bolt up to the zc and give me 5 gears? what cars do they come on? or should i just stick with the 4?
i know my friend mentioned something about having to send the harness off to some company, any idea what he was talking about? from what i've read so far, it sounds like the harness is pretty much a direct fit.
i've also read that the best ecu to use is from an old integra. is that true or should i just use the one that came with the zc?
the zc is basicly the d16 with a different head correct?
in the future, if he keeps the car, he's going to want a turbo. i know there are many other swaps that are much better but since we already have the zc, we're gonna stick with that for now. how well does it respond to forced induction. what turbo is common for this? he's not into drag racing so a nice small fast spooling turbo would be ideal.
sorry for the ignorance but i would really like to help my brother out and my searching has just led me to some mixed information and more questions. please help me out in any way you can, i appreciate it!

ok.. if it has a 4spd stick then it was a STD model civic, w/ a dpfi d15 motor. you're going to have to add wiring for the 2 extra injectors the zc comes with. the best ecu for a zc is a pg7 out of a 88-89 teg.
the best tranny for your situation is the 90-91 civic/crx si tranny.
basically all the mechanicals of installing the motor are the same for a civic or crx. so a crx "how-to" would cover most of the info u need.

this wiring for the two extra injectors...is that pretty straight forward or do i indeed need to have someone else do it? </TD></TR></TABLE>

In order for the ZC swap to occur without a hitch, it's important to select the proper ZC engine to begin with. If you are going to try to keep your tranny for now, you need a black top ZC(JDM) as opposed to the brown top(USDM) because the drivetrain on a 86-89 teg ZC is in no way compatible with the EF chassis. In order to make sure you have the right ZC engine, the driver side mount should be behind the timing belt cover...if it's positioned in the front of the engine, you got the wrong motor. I'm not sure if its a 5 speed, but the only other tranny besides the original you have is the 88-91 JDM civic ZC tranny. If you have a lx, dx, or std model, you will need additional wiring in order to convert the dual injector setup to a regular 4 injector setup. In addition to that, an injector resistor box must also be mounted and wired into place. Look at the service manual for info on that. If you have any of the other models, the wiring is pretty simple. On all harnesses, because the cylinder position sensor is now located on the end of the exhaust camshaft as opposed to the inside of the distributor, the sending wires will need to be rerouted to the new location. The round distributor plug on the civic engine harness for all models except the lx, dx, or std will need to be cut off and exchanged for the swuare plug found on the ZC engine harness. The best ecu is from the JDM civic and crx of this time(the ecu that matches the motor). This is called the PM7. You could also use the PG7(86-89 Integra). You could also get a PM6, but it will not work as good as the other two. Other than the timing belt cover rubbing the underside of the hood, the installation is very easy. Just drop it in and bolt it up. To fix the rub problem, just put a few hardened washers under the left side mount to drop it a fuzz. If the original transmission is being used, which i recommend for now, then you're just about done. let me know if you're useing the other tranny. An 88-91 Civic Si throttle cable will give you proper throttle control. Make sure you have the right fuel injection feed line, the one with the large damper pulsation nut. If not, then get a fuel injection feed line off an 88-91 CRX Si. The top radiator hose should be replaced with one from an 86-89 integra and trim it to size. a/c and power steering(if you have it) will bolt right up. for the power steering bracket, you must use a bracket from the ZC integra or the JDM ZC. the pump will bolt right up to that. That should just about do it.
good luck
good luck
yeah what he just said...i seen the same artical in a mag...but the best tranny to use is 88-91 si and zc to me anit nothing but a sohc with a dohc head and diff pistons....its a good motor to start with...but 4 some serious auto cross racing u gonna has to step it up to a bseries or just turbo the zc..oh buy the way if u do the zc or any swap u gonna have to put dx or si spindles on the front cause the std and hf modles are to small to accecpt integra axles...u might want to consider a rear disc converson....it will help u stop a little better and plus they look a litle better than drums.. goon luck on your project
