*DIY* First Time Welding, What Do I Buy, Need, Tools, Basic Welder?(Tig)
Brand spanking new to welding, dont know a dam thing.
Only thing I feel I know is that TIG welding is where you just point and shoot and MIG you have to feed the wire in via your free hand correct?
Well over the winter Im looking to become very familiar with welding and want to make my own manifold/downpipe and maybe a few cool things around the house.
I think I would prefer a TIG welder, I dont ever plan to weld ******* car frames or 1" thick metal, just manifolds, exhaust piping and such.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Like I dont know any of the terms for welding, I get that the wire for TIG, has to be shot at a certain speed and a certain ammount of heat but thats honestly the extent of my knowledge.
I plan to walk into sears/canadian tire and just buy a welder and have at some scrap for a little while til i get the hang of it but need to know what types of functions/numbers a welder should have
Like some of them run of gas or something right (argon?)
I really dont want to have to fill a bottle and Im rpetty sure there are just electric welders that I can plug into any wall socket correct?
Now seriously, is TIG welding just point and shoot? Like just pull the trigger, watch the wire come out while holding the tip 1/2" away (or whatever distance) and keep moving at a constant speed ove the material in occordance to the heat and speed of the wire your applying?
Thanks for any help
Great idea for a forum

I'm not going to get into huge detail here, and make an *** of my self. But you have TIG, and MIG reversed man. Mig is a wire feed, whereas TIG uses a filler rod (for your free hand as you said it). Go to the can tire website, and check out the MIG pack 10, it's on sale this week for $499 CDN (shut up to all the americans about the price) it's a dual style mig, gas or gasless. It's up to you that way. You can start with no gas, and if you decide later on that you want to try gas, you already have a machine that'll handle it.

Oh really TIG is where you have to feed it manually by hand?
So Im really looking for a MIG?
If anyone could help me out with the type of number I need
I doubt I will ever need to do anything EVER to need gas
But Im sure I definetely want the auto wire feed

u sound like you need to pick up a book and figure out what you need first. You dont even know what kind of welder you want.
If you want any kind of quality weld you want to use gas.
when starting to weld theres about $250+ more of supplies you'll need. like gloves, welding rod, gas, tank, regulator, cart, metal, a helmet alone can be 100+.
I would strongly suggest going to barnes and noble and picking up one of there "welders for dummies books" cause it'll save you a lot of money.
a entry level tig will run you about 1200 bucks
a decent mig will run about 500

Here are some good starter machines, the Lincoln can weld the thickest metal.

Entry level TIG for $1200?
Im not ******* welding aircraft aluminum bud, Im just making some exhaust pieces and tack welding some small things.
Lol I dont even know which welder allows point and shoot
Im also not interested in gas, gas just means the welds are deeper/stronger correct?
I really dont care if Im only welding 1/16"-1/8" thick metal
Thanks for any help though
Also you see these deals at crappy tire, mask, wire and the whole complete bundle, doesnt seem to expensive, I just wanna know if it has to have certain fuctions n such

No sorry I didnt, Im like that. Ill read the posts until I get mad or find something I want to talk bout and just post
Thanks for taking the time for the links though
But like I said, I just want a basic electric with "point and shoot" auto wire feed lol, wtf is it called, MIG or TIG
Thanks

Wants an electric, point n shoot style for small exhaust jobs and fabricating fun welder
Not much simpler than that
Not much simpler than that
ur gonna want a mig then....
again, a cheap TIG welder is like 1000+ dollars, so just go with the mig...it feeds the wire and u can go gas eventually, if you decide that the non-gas welds are not good enough...i believe TIG welders MUST use gas, am i wrong? idk, i'm a Noob when it comes to welding.

cheapest tig ive ever seen runs 900, and the next cheapest ive seen is the one i own and it ran me 1200 bucks. hobart tigmate(econto tig)
Dont get mad at me for how high the price is.
most definatly pick up a book b4 you make a 1000 dollar mistake. 20 bucks on a book or 1K on a useless welder....hmmm

"POINT AND SHOOT man, POINT AND SHOOT"
And if you want some "fabricating fun" go get a chainsaw and find a tree and "fabricate" yourself a damn book and a brain to interpret it.
Now, back to the welders... may I suggest a Hobart 140? I like Hobart they make our power carts and those things are damn near bulletproof. ;-) Anybody that can make an IC engine to power up a C-17 is
in my book.
They can be had for around $470-500

YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD MORE THAN ONCE... YES, YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A WIRE-FED MIG WELDER... MIG... M-I-G... Muh...Ih...Guh... MIG.... Also pronounced: MIG.

Jesus, fabricate yourself a helmet.
1.) My hands shake, and I TIG for hours. If your hands shake so bad that you can't TIG poorly, then you won't be able to MIG well. It's not "Point and Shoot". It is, however, simple to use ONCE YOU GET THE CONCEPTS.
2.) Instead of jumping in head first into an expensive piece of machinery, go find a friend, a friend's friend, the guy down the street, who cares, give them 10 bucks, and have them give you an introduction to their machine. A welder isn't a cheap watch, if taken care of, you can use them for years, upon years, upon years. So, don't make the wrong decision and buy a welder without trying it, or a comparable model first.
Or any welder first. Some people just can't weld. It's a fact of life. There is a guy in our shop, he can cut, mill, lathe, eyeball, whatever, like a badass. Precise stuff. You give him some simple thick tube to corner, and he'll blow a hole in it every single time.
This isn't something you can find out by asking guys on the internet what would be a good first time machine.
